Hi, Alan.

Thanks, I ended up shuffling the bits of the original first verse into the second half and tried to give each half something slightly different to say.

Natalie vocaloid sounds wonderful. She has such a soft and gentle voice - you coached her well!

Honestly, I didn't do that much work - she's pretty much out of the box. Of course, it helped that this melody doesn't have a lot of dynamics.

Pretty amazing how you mixed so many tracks to be so coherent and mutually supporting without cluttering the stage. I'm impressed!

It's sort of like that old joke: God invented time so everything wouldn't happen at once. A lot of the instruments have bit parts - they have one or two lines, and then they disappear.

Plus, the Trackspacer plugin does a nice job keeping tracks out of the vocal if they happen to be playing at the same time.

Thanks for listening and commenting! smile

A really well build arrangement and a really nice song.
The voice is a good fit...the subtle use of sibilance and plosives emphasizes the reality part of the virtual.
I did notice that a few last notes in some lines were every so slightly clipped but that's becasue I was intrigued and listening closely.
ACE!

Hi David,

You are growing and growing in working with the AI voices. You only have one competitor, well more a soulmate i should say: Jannesan.
Natalies' vocals are sounding very humanlike. Impressing!

I only had two remarks on the song; For me Natalie starts singing almost abruptly, just after the song begins. And to me she sang very close in the mike, maybe a tiny bit too close. But beside those minor things it is a very nice song and a wonderful voice.

I watched the site and instruction videos of these vocals some time ago. I skipped it, because of it's learning curve in relation to what i still had to learn about other challenges on the mixing and mastering front. But there comes a day I want to use it for my background singers...

Sorry, David, I thought you inserted question marks to ask for constructive criticism. My advice always come from the "pitchable" angle, because that is what I strive for. As I said before, I really did enjoy this song though.

Very nice to hear Natalie on your hands smile She has lot of potential, I have her also now... she sounds especially nice in the middle range. The low range she is singing here sounds bit unnatural, but I think it may be due the effects and the way she is mixed to front.

Beautiful romantic song, "down lazy rivers we glide" just one example of fine lyricism. Nice slowly gliding melody and enjoyable chord progression - "the sun is so high in my forever July" part works especially well.

The band works very well, nothing distracts me. I like how the drums and the bass are mixed.

David.

LOVE everything about this.

Love the melody!
Love the lyric!
Love the production.
Love that vocal!!!

This is quite "current" sounding. Alternative Pop.
One of those could-play-during-the-credits song.

LOVED it!
(did I say that already?)

Excellent use of Synth V.

Pleasant laid back song, easy to listen to and well mixed.

Yep, you're right about that. I normally go through the vocals and manually normalize the syllables, but I had purchased a plug-in that promised to do that for me. I tried that out, and It made it somewhat better, but I really should have chosen the option to write the automation (which the plug-in does) and manually adjusted it.

I sort of justified my laziness by telling myself it's part of her style, but I really should have gone back and corrected it. I still might, if I find the time and motivation. wink

Thanks for listening and the positive feedback!

I think it's the other way around - the SynthV vocals are getting better and requiring less work. And I'm not complaining about that! laugh

You're right on both counts - the introduction is abrupt, and it's a very close-mike sound.

I'm not sure how to make the intro smoother. Starting on a strong plosive - /k/ doesn't really provide a lot of options. I considered "Please catch me..., and it's still an option I may play with a bit.

I was going for a very close mike sound, but there's reverb to soften it. Getting a good balance with the vocal is something that I struggle with, because one of my main considerations is making sure the lyric is intelligible as possible. (Although using words like "pirouette" probably doesn't help).

I adjusted the vocal in the mix a bit, adding some reverb to the aspiration and backing her off the mike a bit. But that's the mix you heard, so there's still probably some room to go.

It really is a cost/benefit sort of thing. I think it's actually pretty easy to use, but working with piano roll notation isn't the most fun thing ever. You should be able to import MIDI from BiaB, if that's part of your existing workflow.

The biggest advantage for me is that I can easily make changes to lyrics and melody with very little cost. For example, I changed on of the lines in the last version, and it took almost no effort. Once the notes are in the piano roll, it's easy enough to move them around and try all sorts of things.

Thanks for listening and commenting!

Thanks, Bob.

When I started using the synthetic vocals, my hope was that they wouldn't be that distracting to the listener and take the focus away from the song.

It's pretty amazing how far they've come since then.

I appreciate you stopping by for a listen and a kind word! smile

I appreciated the feedback!

As I was working on the song, I hit a point where I had to decide if I was going to keep going down the current path, or start ripping up stuff and making it more commercial and pop.

I'm pretty happy with the end result, but I wanted to acknowledge what I didn't do - create a pop song. As you pointed out, the options were there if I wanted to take them!

Thanks again! laugh

Hi, Janne.

Yeah, blame me and my lack of mixing skills! (I'm sure you're right! laugh )

I just happened to like the low range of the voice, and I have a habit of pushing the vocal to the front of the mix. I may have gone a bit too far, but to my ears it's very pretty.

But now I need to spend some time learning what she sounds like in the middle and upper register as well!

That's good to hear. I went back and had another shot at getting the kick to sit a bit better in the mix. There's a bit of a cut on it so the bass low end, and I may go back and add TrackSpacer on the drum just to make sure the kick stay out of the way of the bass.

Thanks for listening and your suggestions! smile

David,

This is fantastic listening.

I don't know how you programmed Natalie to sound so amazing but she does an incredibly convincing job as a real life singer. I love those upper auxiliary notes that you used for melodic decoration. They boosted Natalie's vocal realism enormously.

The backing is brilliant. Everything sits so well that it's a delight to sail along with the music as the song unfolds.

You've sure got the knack! Every way I look and listen to this, it's a really fine work of art.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Noel

Hi David,

That vocal sounds really good! Quite complex and full bodied, great tone. After hearing what you and B.D. are able to accomplish with these robo-vocalists, that technology is definitely on my list of things to learn about.

Good song overall, good write, doesn't need a chorus in my book.

Nice choice of instrumentation too. Super slow tempo doesn't bother me, probably 75% of my songs are at super slow tempo's wink

Good one, enjoyed!

Falling asleep? No. I dig the atmosphere you created. With the song's captivating melody, you don't need a chorus. I am more reminded of Julee Cruise than KC.

Note: The Xtra Styles require the UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition of Band-in-a-Box®. (Xtra Styles PAK 21 requires the 2025 or higher UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition. They will not work with the Pro or MegaPAK version because they need the RealTracks from the UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition.
