One important piece of information that was not included was the fact that good MIDI sound sources will not let you play notes that are not in the instruments range. Yes there are some exceptions where a very talented musician can extend the instruments range but the majority of players are not in that group.

I ran into this once with piccolo trumpet. The sample library would let me write high E but not high F. Piccolo trumpets in A play high F (concert D) in many pieces. It’s hard for some players but better ones can do it, and even a G. I needed the F in a piece I was arranging so I hacked the definitions file for the sampler. It turned out they had recorded the high F but didn’t want people to access it.
