I have made several attempts to copy my 500g audiophile external drive to a 750gig ext. drive without much luck. I can get halfway through it and get an error which stops the copy process.
Six hours wasted....Should it take up to 12 hours to copy BB file??? Any suggestions? I'm am doing copy and paste vs. using backup program. Tried backup program and it only backed up 8o gig over night

Welcome to the forum.

It sounds like one of the files may be corrupt. It could also be a problem with the cut and paste method using too much memory in the copy operation, though I've never seen this happen.

I assume you have BIAB version 2009, since the 2010 audiophile version requires a 1.5 TB drive.

I have successfully backed up most of my audiophile drive. I say "most" because I back up only the folders in the RealTracks folder that I will use. The original PG Music disk then is retired, and it becomes "the backup".

I use a utility called Total Commander, but if you would like to give it a try and do it manually, two Windows Explorer windows would work.

The only really large files are the RealTracks, and to a lesser extent, the RealDrums.

Select and copy everything in the /BB folder except the RealTracks and Real Drums folders.

Then copy the RealDrums folder over.

Create a RealTracks folder on the new drive. Then select and copy only some of the Real Tracks folders. This way, you will be working in manageable chunks. If there is a corrupt file, you can work around it.

If you are at all unsure of doing it this way, call Support for their advice.

Good luck.

Hi,

What is the error message? Are you using a laptop or desktop computer? A couple of suggestions are:

1-Re-seat both of the hard drives by taking off the enclosures (should be two little screws on the PG Music drive), and disconnecting/firmly reconnecting the disk to the enclosure.

2- Make sure you have both drives plugged into USB ports on the back of your computer, using both of the USB connectors on the Y cables.

3-Disable any power saving features on your computer (via control panel), to prevent it from going into some kind of sleep mode. Some laptops have features that shut down power to USB devices after some time.

On a typical computer, it might take a few hours.

Back when i was still running BIAB audiophile as an external USB drive, I experienced the same (or at least similar) copy failures that you are experiencing. This was a couple of editions back and I don't remember right now if my operating system was Vista or Windows 7 at that point in time. My first solution was to move the copy operations from my desktop where the faiure was occuring, to my laptop which runs Windows XP. The backup copy process was still a long process because of the massive size of the audiophile edition, but the XP laptop got it done. If Matt and Andrew's suggestions don't get your problem fixed, I'd recommend trying the backup with a different computer if you have one available, especially one that is running XP, and see if that works for you.

After the BIAB backup experience on my desktop, I noticed other failures of rather large copy attempts between USB drives on my desktop. I did a lot of googling and searching of windows forums at the time and couldn't find anything. Finally, someone private messaged me on one of the Windows forums and pointed me to a hot fix that Windows doesn't include in their updates because it only affects a few computers. There is a certain chipset that has some issues with large copy operations on USB drives. I think it is possible to screw your computer up if you apply the hot fix and you don't need to. I debated the pros and cons, decided that my computer had the chip set in question, and applied the hotfix. It worked, and I don't have problems copying files from USB drives any longer.

Try some of the other suggestions first and if you still can't get the drive copied let me know and I'll try to dig up he PM that I got that pointed me to the hot fix page for the problem. I'm thinking that this was a Windows 7 issue rather than a Vista issue.

I'm skeptical of the DLL file speculation, but I'm pleased it works for you now.
