I noticed a strange behaviour in BIAB, and lost a nearly finished song :
I was working on that song (using RealTracks only) and got an access violation after changing something in the F5 dialogbox. I had to close BIAB by Windows taskmanager.
After closing BIAB, the song file was gone. Even recovery tools (PCInspector, Recuva File Recovery) could not restore the song file. Both tools said, it was too corrupted.

I’m using BIAB 2010 Buíld 299 and Windows 7 64-bit. The song was saved on an internal NTFS harddrive.

Hi ralf,

I know the feeling. It's very frustrating when hundreds of hours go into a project and it's then lost because of a computer hiccup. I learned a long time ago never to trust any computer program (Word, Excel, BIAB, etc.). I'm always hitting cntrl+s to save everything as I go. Also, after around 5 or so saves, I use "Save As" to save the song with a new file name. That way if the current file becomes corrupted, I have an earlier version to start from (and thus save a lot of time).

Good luck,
Noel

I've experienced a similar problem. I think it may be caused by not letting BIAB finish an action you started and pressing another button for another action. Later, Ray

Thanks Noel,
it would be a good idea if BIAB would automatically create backup versions.
In Microsoft WORD you can adjust that. (*. bak files)
Should be an option for the next update.

Hi Ray,
causesed by the accsess violation error, I had no cance to let BIAB finish the action.
BIAB was frozen and Windows Task Manager finished the Task.

Hello Ralf,

If you had saved the song file at any time, it should still be saved on your hard drive - i.e. the fact that the program crashed wouldn't by itself delete the song file. You should do a search on your entire hard drive via Start menu | Search, and type in part of the file name that you remember. It could be that you accidentally saved it somewhere unusual. If you can't remember the exact name of the file, try a search for *.sgu or *.mgu and look for the most recently modified file. Only if you had NOT saved your song at all before the crash - then you would be out of luck, or perhaps something really unusual happened.

Hello Andrew,

I saved the file yesterday in my usual working directory "d:/biab-songs/".
Today I continued working and loaded the file. When changing some parameter in the F5 dialogbox, BIAB crashed while the song file was open.

BBWERROR.LOG in /bb shows the entry: "Access violation at address 00401DC1 in module 'bbw.exe'. Read of address C8B4F15C at: 00401DC1".

I had to kill the BIAB-task by using Windows Task-Manager. The song file was gone in "d:/biab-songs/".
I seached with windows search on all drives but without results.

The tools "PCInspector" and "Recuva File Recovery" show me 4 deleted file versions with different time stamps in "d:/biab-songs/" but are unable to recover them because of corruption.

BTW: the BBWERROR.LOG shows 23 errors with "Access violation at address xxxxxxxx in module 'bbw.exe'. Read of address xxxxxxxx at: xxxxxxxx" in 4 months. 23 errors of 34 are access violations!

Ralf

Hello Ralf,

The 'address numbers' by themselves aren't very helpful in trying to figure out what caused it. It is most likely a specific sequence of events and perhaps a specific song that caused it. If it happens again, write down exactly what you did just before you got the error, then restart the program and see if you can get it to happen again by following the same steps. If so, it would be great if you could send us the method to duplicate it, along with the song file, to support @pgmusic.com and refer to this forum post. Also, include basic information about your MIDI and audio driver setup, and computer (operating system, sound card).
