Has anyone noticed REASON's Chord Sequencer feature.
You can choose the type of music, and then some chord suggestions will be given. When you click a start, he will recommend some chords. I don't know if BAND IN A BOX has a similar function?

I'm not a Reason user (for an unknown reason). However, I'm not aware of this exact type of feature currently being available in Band In A Box - well, at least in the way reason delivers it.

(Additionally, the user interface looks quite stylish. smile )

Others may know more.

Well, in a way, BIAB does that already via the Demo songs even though it's just one chord structure suggestion per style.

Cheers,

If you go to support, videos, slide down to intermediate third column over fifth video down there is one called chord builder. It may not be as fancy as the reason tool, but very usable I have worked out several projects with it. Be patient and watch all the way through. Here is a link.

There are two useful BIAB features that will meet you halfway, using one of two different methods:

1. Write some chords, highlight them, and go to Edit, Chords, then one of the options for Chord Substitution.

2. Write a melody on the MIDI track, and go to Edit, Chords, then one of the options for Chord Reharmonization.

I like these because they require some effort on your part to begin writing the rudiments of a song, rather than just choosing a genre.

The Chord Builder (Ctrl+Shift+B, or right-click anywhere on the chord sheet and select Chord Builder) has a section that shows you chords that you can use. There is a ton of information in this dialog. In the Chord Theory section hover over each of the row headings to learn what each row of chords is used for. The top line of chords are the diatonic chords in the key. Most pop tunes use combinations of these chords. If you want to spice up the chord progression, add some chords from the lower rows. Click on the chord button in the row to insert the chord at the current location. Additionally, if you click on the right portion of the chord button, the drop-down menu gives you all the different variations / qualities of that chord, for example, C, Cmaj7, Cmaj9, and so on.

thank you.

If possible, please add a keyboard to "The Chord Builder".

What that Reason applet shows you is a set of chords that work with the key you have selected. While the BIAB Chord Builder is powerful, it is basically a tool to create a chord if you already pretty much understand how to select chords to begin with, i.e., create progressions.

Here are a couple very useful diagrams that show you the relationships and order of progress of diatonic chords from the tonic chord of the key you select to work with.

Minor Key Chord Map

This seems to be helpful. But I don't quite understand.
I need to take my time.

Learning the rudiments of music theory and learning to play a bunch of songs obviates the need for apps of this nature.

Its really not that hard.

Micro-mini course. Read the legend at the bottom of the diagrams. The 'I' chord is the tonic chord. Were we in the key of C Major, the C Major chord would be the 'I' chord. The 'V' chord is the dominant chord. In the key of C Major this is G Major chord. So in Key of C Major I = C; ii = Dm (minor chords are lower case); iii = Em; IV = F; V = G; iv = Am; and iiv = B diminished. This use of Roman numerals is usually called the 'Nashville System.'

In other words, whatever key you chose, take G Major for example, G will now be the 'I' or tonic.

The beginning rule of progressions - to be broken once you understand it - is start with a tonic or 'I' and end with a dominant or 'V' before returning to the tonic in the next verse, chorus, etc.

These diagrams work for all keys as they focus on the intra-key relationships common to all. There are directional arrows to certain of the green shapes that indicate when you leave the blue areas, sometimes there are only specific ways there and back.

These diagrams contain practically everything anyone needs to know about which chord can follow which chord.

under melody there is an option to generate a solo with chords - in essence to create a complete song at the touch of a button which is what the OP seems to be looking for in many posts.

choose the soloist closest to what you want and BIAB will generate melody and chords. surely a good way to achieve some ideas of what works and what doesn't? and of course things will be differeent every time you generate a new song from the melody drop down.

seems closer to what the OP wants than asking him to learn a lttle about music which doesn't seem to go down too well

There is a nice bit in Rick Beato's "what makes this song great" series with Seal and "A Kiss From A Rose", where Rick asks Seal the thinking behind a particular strange but beautiful chord progression and Seal just says "Nobody told me I couldn't do that".

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
