Once you use Alt+F8 to re-generate a section it will set the track state to frozen yet you can still re-generate other sections via Alt+F8 while frozen.
You can make a copy of the track data to a spare track and mute it, you can do this in the Audio Edit window by setting it to Snap then just copy paste.
