Background
This is new genre for me, I hope I did it at least partial justice.

It also is a "threshold song" in that my learning made a quantum leap. I discovered and used MIDI for the 1st time and I'm feeling like a progressed from a training wheels bike to a full blown big boys bike smile

I also solved my problem of not being able to pan, it was a problem in how I setup my interface software.

I discovered that Studio One has a built-in drum machine complete with a 16 step sequencer . . . you-hooo!
So I injected 2 MIDI voices in this song; a crumb shaker (panned left) and a wood block (panned right). This is like a whole percussion solar system and a MIDI galaxy opening up for me . . . very cool stuff.

Comments always welcomed.

Nice.

The keyboard instrumental starting around 1:09 is a bit low in the mix for my taste.

Works for me! smile

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Thumper using MIDI! Welcome to the Dark Side grin

IMHO this is absolutely your best to date.

Super grove.
Nice melodies!
A great mix.
Outstanding bass chops!

Loved it

Yep, "dark side" here I come. smile
The funny thing is that when I thought "MIDI" I thought tediously dragging and dropping little squares bar by bar and phrase by phrase. That could be what some do but I found getting started with the percussion sequencer surprisingly intuitive and musically rewarding. I'm looking forward to exploring other rhythm patterns in the future with this new-found tool.

Many, many thanks for the inspirational words.
And don't beam me up Scotty, there's too much musical fun to be had down here wink

Hi Bass Thumper,

Sounds great to me. Guitar excellent. Yes the piano could come up a notch or two.

Look forward to hearing more of your experiments.

Best Regards
Nigel

Hi Steve
Very good instrumental song
Really has a Havana touch ;-)
The only thing that can not quite keep up with it piano solo
Otherwise the song was really fun
Good work Steve
Many greetings
Andi ;-)

Yep, I agree on the piano, and most everything is an experiment for me.
Glad you enjoyed it.

Hey Andi, thanks for kind words, glad you enjoyed this.
For me the "Havana touch" is the BiaB percussion. There is so much going on and to my ears this percussion is very complex yet crisp, not muddy. Kudos to the BiaB team that took the time and applied the skill to deliver such quality.

Oh, yeah, Steve. You can now ride a unicycle, a motorcycle, or even a a wonderful Caribbean orchestra. What a great sound. Yeah, that guitar is perfect, and of course (for me) your bass is the glorious glue that holds it all together. Very cool.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Mario better be looking over his shoulder. You’ve done a good job on this one. It’s all about rhythm on these Latin tunes. Your bass fits right in there. Nicely done, Tom

Nice groove, percussion adds interest, guitars sound fine, and solid job on the bass.

Your best so far, of the ones I've heard anyway wink

Ha. I do appreciate the words Marty, but there is so much more learning to do.

It's funny you mention the unicycle. When we were kids there was a neighbor that had one, and he could ride it. I took one look at the thing and valued my skull more that a one-wheel ride. Keep in mind, these were the days before bike helmets. But my younger brother was friends with this kid and after a week or so he was pedalling around on it. I preferred building ramps out of logs and plywood and flying over them on my 2-wheeler.

Thanks Tom, glad you liked it. I agree it is all about that rich, complex rhythm structure but "Captain Mario" has nothing to worry about here. While he's exploring distant galaxies in his star ship and enjoying the lovely ladies on far-off planets (at least during his pre-marriage days), I'm putting bandaids on my scraped knees from falling off my big boys bike smile

I enjoyed this a lot. Very nice instrumental. I wouldn't even know where to start with MIDI, so I admire your skills already. I sure liked the Biab guitar you chose and your bass playing was very good throughout the song - I especially liked it in the musical breaks, I thought it added a lot. Congratulations on a job well done!
