I first went on stage when I was in junior high school, and never had stage fright. That's late compared to others.

My dad played a few instruments. Because it was small, portable and readily available, he would open music books, play the uke, and we children would sing along. He did this for as long as I can remember. I loved that.

But for my first 5 years I was in a parochial school, and the nuns made us all get up in front of the class and give reports, or whatever else was involved in the assignment. I think that started in first grade.

So I was never nervous about being 'on stage'. In fact, I'm comfortable on stage, more than on the dance floor.

I joined a group of musicians who started a band a long time ago. We rehearsed at the piano player's house, worked up a couple of dozen songs, and got our first gig. The pianist was so nervous he was sweating profusely, played a couple of songs in a different key from the one we practiced it in, and somehow we pulled through the gig.

I felt sorry for him, but quit the band. Thankfully, we remained friends.
