WHATCHA GONNA DO WITH YOUR LIFE

This is a total re-write and new recording of song I posted a couple of years ago! Ron Helm and I sat down last week and improved the lyrics (at least I think we did) and I started over from the ground up with the recording. Thanks for having a listen!

Organ - Sorry I don't have the Realtrack # Used only in the intro section

Drums - Drums On Demand

Vocals
Bass
Guitars - Acoustic and electric
Keyboards - Piano and organ

Whatcha Gonna Do With Your Life
Words and Music by
Torrey Bliss and Ron Helm
©2023 Glass Gate Music

Sand falls through the hourglass
Time slips away and life goes on
Through a window you look in the past
Searching for just where you went wrong
The silence screams so loud
Words lost and never found

Its sad how we justify
Things we do in our life
A promise made fades away
When we trade tomorrow for today
Pride will lead the fool
The wise embrace the truth

Whatcha gonna do
When the truth dawns on you
That you've missed the best days of your life
Chances you've been taking
Have long been in the making
You know your well is gonna run dry

Things in life that were given
You see them fading away
It's a hard truth now that you're living
You can't take what you have to the grave
That long and winding road
Will never lead you home

Whatcha gonna do
When the truth dawns on you
That you've missed the best days of your life
Chances you've been taking
Have long been in the making
You know your well is gonna run dry
Dreams that you've been chasin'
With unreal expectations
Has kept the veil over your eyes
If you will awaken
You'll see what you've forsaken
So whatcha gonna do with your life

Whatcha gonna do
When the truth dawns on you
That you've missed the best days of your life
Chances you've been taking
Have long been in the making
You know your well is gonna run dry
Dreams that you've been chasin
With unreal expectations
Has kept the veil over your eyes
If you will awaken
You'll see what you've forsaken
Oh whatcha gonna do with your life

I really enjoyed your song - it sounded very professional. There was a great lead break and the panning was a great touch.. well done!

Howdy Torrey....

Cool song.
Easy tempo, good lyrics and damn fine vox throughout.

(as with one of my songs....are you talking to your "mini-me" self also? smile )

Great stuff, as usual Torrey.

Carry on....

What a wonderful start to a new year of Torrey and Ron. (I like that Glass Gate --there must be a story there.) Not knowing the lyrics before you reworked them, the only thing I can say is they cannot now be improved. I really like the melody as it drops. Then of course that incredible guitar of yours. There's a lot of goodness in that mix. Very well done, Torrey & Ron.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Another great one Torrey - I especially like the writing. I go along with Marty here, I never heard the first one, but don't know how you could improve this. You've got a signature sounding vocal and guitar tone - there's no mistaking a Torrey Bliss performance, and this is like all of them - pure excellence. I also thought the mix was fantastic. The bass seemed more prominent in this recording that some of your others, and man, you picked the heck out of it - really good. That was a neat idea for introducing that last chorus and I like the way you brought the lead guitar back in. I'd be willing to be that you already thought of this, and that it sounds better as is, but I thought it might sound good to use just one bend in the guitar lick at about 2:06 to echo the bend in your voice when singing the word "road", but just an idea. I'm looking forward to hearing another year of your songs. Keep 'em coming ... please!

Torrey, you never disappoint with your songs. The mix is professional , the vocals are always top level and the writing is always meaningful and accessible at same time. Well done again, Tom. I enjoyed the telephone vocal at the end.

Thanks Wayne! Although a specific person I once knew was the main impetus for the lyrics, I was certainly looking in the mirror for some of the lines also!

Thanks, T

Professional all the way Torrey. And on top of it you played everything except the drums and intro organ; multi-talented indeed!

Like Tommy, I also like the telephone voice, I believe this is the first time here I've heard that effect. I think the Beatles and The Electric Light Orchestra have a song or 2 that uses that effect and I've always liked it. Great job.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Torrey.

great doubled voc choruses...

i just cant place your superb vocal timbre/style.. but it reminds me of a great singer from maybe 70's ? or 80's ?

but i cant place my finger on who. does anyone else know what i mean ?? who is it ?

superb left/right voices/fx later in the song...very clever.

i cant get the song out of my head.

kudos.

happy 2023 to you.

Torrey...a song is only as good as the lyric...I am a firm believer that a great song will also read as great poetry...this meets that criteria...and then when you add the signature sound of Torrey Bliss (both vocally and instrumentally)...well...this is what you get! I'm on my third listen and brother each time it gets better! I always look forward to your next post!

PS. Here's my only nit-pick...I thought the drums were a bit loud (in my studio monitor mix) and the bass drum could have been a bit "beefier" it sounded "paper-ish" to my ears...but my ears are old wink ...loved the song!

Cool song!

Vocals solid as usual, and an upbeat and poppy chorus.

Band was great, too - well played, but stayed out of the way of the vocal, just like they should. wink

Still, the bass got some cool licks in. smile

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

I don't know the original version, but I like this one a lot, good lyrics and vocals, good arrangement and mix.

The bass drum could have a bit more low end and I'm not a big fan of this kind of snare sound, but those are my only nits.

It's already quite good as it is now.

Lyrics and performance all good.
Interesting panning on the voices too.
Maybe the bass and kick drum are competing a bit but on the whole, a good one.

Thanks Derochette, Bass Thumper, OM, Firesong, dcuny, David, Brad, Tom, Marty, Dani, BD Thomas, Vic and whoever else may listen and comment! I had various comments back and forth on the drums concerning levels and eq. I will just say that I am satisfied with the overall sound of them. Considering that they are DOD drums that come as a stereo file, I can't separate them from each other to make adjustments! I personally feel that they sound pretty good. I like the snare sound of these for my tunes. I certainly don't feel the kick has a "paper" sound to it as one listener commented! Anyway, once again thanks to all for your time to listen and comment! I appreciate it! T

Excellent, Torrey! Love the melody and vocal, and very catchy chorus.

Drums sound great to me, as does the guitar.
