Here is a song which is a collaboration with my daughter. She wrote the lyrics and I wrote the music. The bass and drums are based on a Soul/Pop style which I exported from BIAB and then changed a little. The piano is based on a UJAM plug-in called Vibe. I have used a SynthV vocalist called “Natalie”, but she is modified in terms of “Gender” setting and a couple of other tweaks.

Wasted Hopes

Lyrics

Through the storm she saw it all
Rain soaking through her clothes
A look of love but not for her
She’d known it since his call

Simple mistake, what’s in a name
The damage had been done
One careless moment. Dots now joined
She’ll never feel the same

Wasted hopes. Wasted years.
Pointless dreams. Pointless tears.

They’d been so happy with their lot
Not much, but who needs more
At least she’d though so. Clearly not
She’d always felt so sure

Can’t unsee, can’t unhear
Can’t go back, can’t stay here

Wasted hopes. Wasted years.
Pointless dreams. Pointless tears.

In the darkness, driving rain
Never certain until now
A look of love but not for her
Warm lights, soft touch, champagne.

Wasted hopes. Wasted years.
Pointless dreams. Pointless tears.

I like your song and the lyrics say it all and still leave room for my own interpretation. I like that a lot.
The choice of instruments and the arrangement are also good, maybe a bit more variation wouldn't hurt.

What I'm not 100% happy with is Natalie's voice, I know from experience that fiddling with the 'gender' settings almost always makes Synth V singers sound worse.
If you want a darker voice, use a pitch changing plugin (I assume you're working in a DAW) that can change both pitch and formants, and only change the formants.
That sounds much better!

But other than that, your song is a good start into the world of synthetic singers smile

This sounds pretty cool Kelvin and it is neat you are working with your daughter

I am interested in what all you folks are doing with the AI stuff.

Seems like there's kind of an AI competition going on.

smile

Nice work.

Thanks very much for your comments and suggestions. I am working in Cubase - Can you maybe give the name of a plug-in that will do what you suggest ?

Edited to say that I just realised that I have a "formant" adjustment available in the Vari-Audio tool in my Cubase 12 - but if you have a suggestion for a dedicated plug-in , I would be very interested.

Thanks David - I am new to writing songs with words - because I am useless at singing , so up till now I have been writing instrumental music and recently got into trying to learn to write some orchestral style music for film scenes - all just for fun. I don’t know about an “AI competition”, but the release of English speaking singers and the good thread over on Vi Control has boosted the interest it seems.

Doing the song this way has allowed my daughter to hear what It could sound like and we may try recording her singing it next.

Kelvin,

It's always great to see folks working with their children on a musical project! You did an excellent job putting this together! I don't know anything about using the AI vocals, but it sounds like you know what you are doing with them! Great sounding song!

Thanks, T

Of course there's Melodyne (which I own) and Autotune as professional (and transparent) options, but for what I do, simpler tools like Waves Vocal Bender or Little Alterboy are just fine and easy on the CPU.

Very well done, Kelvin. Yes, BD is right...Natalie doesn't sound as good as she could, but I like you idea of pulling her to the dark side. Very good write. You and your daughter make a great team. Love the lyrics. I like the way she developed the idea of
"A look of love but not for her
She’d known it since his call"
The music is also catchy, and sucha good melody.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Nicely done.

I know trying to get a synth to sound human is a task. You did a good job.

Nicely written lyrics and music to match.

My nit is with the bass line. It goes too low in a number of places which makes it almost non-musical in character. I'd rework it to be at least in the range of a bass guitar. But that's just me.

Aside from that... nice pop tune.

Thanks.

I appreciate that feedback about the bass line - I will take that on board, and listen to it again to see where it could be re-worked.

Hey Kelvin congratulations on finding such a great person with whom to collaborate! I thought you produced a nice full sound with this. I know nothing of these AI voices, but they sound like they would be difficult to manipulate. Because of that I'm reluctant to offer a nit on them. On this particular one, I just personally didn't like the sound of the voice - but that's just a personal thing. I hope you post it again if you wind up recording your daughters voice on it - I think it's gonna be good.

Thanks very much Brad - there are actually quite a few settings that can be tweaked with the AI vocalists, but I appreciate that everyone has a different taste, and I am still learning all of the nuances - I am hoping that my daughter will have a go at the vocal !!

Link & net working now.
There's an odd bass note in the intro but no one else has commented so it's probably just me.
In the lyric you have "She’ll never feel the same" but the vocal sings "never ever". It doesn't sound quite right...I think sticking to the shorter would work better.
Is the bass slightly to the right of centre?
Good song and a nice collaboration.

Cheers
