I have several of these apps including Joanne's.
I look at them in the same way I look at the melodist feature in BB. It's a good way to get an idea started but it by no means is going to write you a well thought out hit lyric. It does however, provide you with a lyric that you can then apply some of your own creative juices, edit where necessary, and flesh out something a lot more creative. At this point it does seem to be a possible alternative to having a staring contest with the screen or a sheet of paper and tossing out ideas that become immediate dead ends.
All I've done to this point is to play around with it to see how it works. I've saved a few that showed some promise and when I have a chance, I will delve into the lyrics a bit further and see what I can turn up.
Anyway, that's my assessment of the state of songwriting AI at this moment.
