Suppose that in a song I put a substyle change (from "a" to "b") at bar 21 (for instance). My question: is that a way to make this change ONLY for some of the tracks? I mean: OK substyle change for guitar and piano, but keeping at bar 21 the "a" substyle for strings?
Yes. In your example to only have some tracks change and others not, freeze the individual tracks you don't want to change. Note that if you unfreeze and regenerate a frozen track, it will generate to the current settings on the Chord Sheet and change to the current sub-style settings.
Using Multi-styles, allows these type of changes and regenerations of all tracks without freezing any tracks but saving sub-style settings. A project can have as many as 24 styles in a project. Each Style will have the "a" and "b" sub-styles allowing for 48 different changes that can be used multiple times throughout the song. Changes are selected and activated by color coded Part Markers.
PG Music uses Multi-Styles frequently in demos and have created many pre-set MultiStyles. My BIAB program has more than 1,000 MultiStyles. You find them in your StylePicker by inserting a "+" without quotations in the search bar. Any Style can be used to make a custom MultiStyle by a user for just one song.

Edit: I was getting an image together and missed your edit but the screenshot will help others too.
Charlie, I have just been "woken" by these multistyles since I am in the middle of a project which could benefit from them. But would it be too much to ask that the mixer and style bars change as the styles change to let one know exactly what is playing as it changes? Or maybe I just have to be patient and do more homework on these.

Color coded Part Markers with small alphabet letters to mark MultiStyle changes. Each song can have as many as 24 Styles, each with "a" and "b" substyles for 48 choices that can be used as often as desired and at any bar.
Entire styles can be changed or simply individual instruments of a style muted or exchanged with a different instrument. Swing and even can be mixed. I don't believe Midi and RealStyles can be mixed other than possibly changing once. You would have to test that.
Or maybe I just have to be patient and do more homework on these.
In my new woken state I now realize, this statement sums up the essence of BIAB! Even after 20 years of working with this program there is still so much to learn. So can I blame my ignorance on the GUI which didn't make this all clearer to me from the getgo ...
