I've been to China to hear those instruments in person.
One night, Mrs. Notes and I went to a nightclub. No English was spoken, and this was before smartphones. They had what appeared to be games with the customers, and in between each game was a musical interlude.
One of the erhu players played so passionately that it brought tears to our eyes.
I found the Chinese people to be very pleasant and respectful.
I'm not fond of their government thought, but then again, I'm not in love with ours, either.
