I've had a Mac for over 10 years. Just bought a Mac mini (needed it for my business). And used to use them on my former job before I retired. Only turn it on when I need to. I just don't care for Mac. In all fairness I have to say I've never even tried it for music. So I couldn't tell you how it does for that. I'll bet money the music is not going to sound any different, though.
If you want to pay almost double for a Mac (as compared to a Windows machine) be my guest. When I first started using computers I would have loved to have had a Mac but back then the price (in the 80s) was ridiculous. As it is now. Put me down for a Windows machine.

Thanks for your thoughts Russ and Charlie.
At this point I would say I'm about 90% leaning toward a Windows machine. The truth is I could probably even consider getting more life out of my 6+ year old Dell P4 3.0Ghz. I would probably just need to add a larger hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows to clear out the accumulated garbage. But ultimately I'm going to want a faster machine -- more for things like photo editing, ripping CDs and converting movies than for the internet and BIAB. The current Dell will work, but it would really be nice to be able to do more than one thing at a time without concern and to speed up the process.
What kind of processor would you consider today and how much memory? I was looking at the Intel i7s (860 vs. 930?) but now I see AMD has a 6 core processor out and those systems seem to be in the same price range as the i7 machines. I've looked at some review of systems online, but they always seem to be geared toward how good a system is for gaming which I am not really interested in.

If you are going to do movies, you'll want a dualcore at least and as much RAM as possible. Quad core even better. Important to still pay attention to the speed of the prosessor. A dual core running at 1 gHz is not going to impress you much after having the P4 3gHz... but a dual core in the 2+ - 4 gHz range will make you notice. I really haven't seen a difference between intel performance compared to comparable AMD for many many years.
