Sing A Song Of Sick Spence on Soundcloud
Sing A Song Of Sick Spence on YouTube

Here's a song about a guy named Spence who did something bad and now is sick about it. Drums stems were used, and the flexibility is perfect. Can't wait for more.
Dave Bell (Blue Attitude) played guitar, and did his usual magic for the intro, fills, solo and outro, but only played on the last chorus. I liked it and was going to paste it to the others, but liked his idea better. Comments, good or bad, are always much appreciated and helpful.

Sing A Song For Sick Spence

Sing a song for sick Spence. He's got a ways to go.
He fell and hurt his feelings on the road where no one goes no more.
He's hiding in the woodshed in the back of granny's place,
and calling it his sick bed where he's held up in disgrace.

Sing a song for sick Spence. His life is looming low.
Let me say in his defense he thought we wouldn't know this much.

When the girl was living he would often watch her work.
Her daddy owned the drug store where Spencer was the clerk for years.
One day he found the courage to ask her on a date.
She laughed. He was discouraged, and closed out rather late.

Sing a song for sick Spence. He's crying in his drink.
He's sitting on the picket fence without a thought to think. Whoa woe.

Floating down the river is a bloody paper cup.
He spies it from his sick bed, and knows his time is up real soon.

Sing a song for sick Spence. His pocket's full of rye.
The druggist's daughter's gone away, and he's left there to cry for life.

Poor Spense indeed, he's hiding in the woodshed, his life so much in need.

Great job guys, Once again pro bass, pro vocals and pro guitar . . . quality muscianship you are known for.

I don't follow the flexibility in the various drum stems though. They sound smooth and natural to me.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

I misread it as Skip Spence initially.
Skip - sad end but Oar was magnificent.
Sick Spence - no the richer, non the wiser.
It's a cool pun to base a song upon.
The harmonies are rich and well place.
Fab solo, (no surprise there).
Cautionary tale and a good one.
Well done sir.

One day I'll tell you about the lobster & the shark - a very tangentially related story that relies on part of the same pun.

Cheers

Marty, as usual you and Dave put out another masterpiece.
As Steve said everything is professional, as usual!
I liked the harmonies in the chorus also.
Great work gentlemen.

I do love an interesting lyric, Marty and you have one here.
Good mix.

Before reading the lyric it sounded like you sang " on the road where no one goes SHOW more".
It could be my ears though.

I misheard the lyrics as "Sing a song for 6 pence" blush

My favorite part is the chorus, I love those harmonies.
As always when you work with Dave, the result is something special.

Good song, good arrangement, good production...absolutely nothing to complain about smile

Marty,

Well that’s a really clever title and write . . . great band accentuated by Mr. Bell’s excellent guitar playing. Engaging chorus with some great, really well mixed and balanced harmonies. Another great one, Marty. Well done!

All my best to you,

Deej

Marty

Excellent clever lyrics, well sung, and performed.

Dave's playing always elevates a song and this is no exception.

Really well done.

Ah, "smooth and natural" is the intent. The stems give us the ability to mix each mic from the drum kit --much more flexibility. More than once I've done a Latin song or something and found the perfect drummer. Only problem was I couldn't get rid of or reduce the guiro, which became annoyingly monotonous. For some songs we may want more of the sound from the BOTTOM of the snare, and Stems make that possible. Thanks for your encouraging comment, Steve.

Love tapping into your vast knowledge, Ray. I had to look up Skip. But now you GOTTA tell me/us the story of the lobster and shark. Thanks!

Marty,
such clever write! Awesome drive & vocals. Signature Dave's guitar adds another dimension to this gem. I assume you played the bass.
Overall, very good package & video. Enjoyed it! Gave it a spin in a car couple of days ago (sounds great btw) and today. Super mix. Thank you for sharing.

Good lines all over the place.
Excellent alliteration!!!
Solid. Through and through.

And a SOLID BAND. Excellent music.
Dave's guitar work is exceptional, as always.
a beautiful mix.

One of your best! (I seem to be saying that to you all the time anymore).
A favorite....for sure...

Haha. Not your ears, Vic. They are excellent. It's likely the effect of age on my voice. wink

Thanks, BD. I wanted 3-part for the harmonies so the low guy starts below the lead then goes above it and back. If I went with 2 above the lead, it would've been way out of my range. Glad you like it.

Deej

Thanks, Deej. Seemed I kept singing "Sing a song for 6 pence" in my head for days, and thought that was awfully cheap to pay for singing a song. But then, unlike happy birthday, it's in public domain, so why would anyone pay anything. The little spark of Lennon I keep in my brain said, "Maybe it's sick Spence."

Thanks, Misha. Every pro studio I've ever been in always had a bunch of different speaker setups, and the final test was always on crappy old car speakers. If it sounds good there, it'll sound good anywhere. They don't make crappy speakers anymore, but I still test them there all the time. It often shows flaws otherwise missed.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
