I don't see any settings telling the Chord Tutor to send whole chords and not Roots only. The Audio driver is MME and Midi is MS GS Wavetable.
I piped the Midi output through a VSTi such as Pianoteq, which features piano only without any other samples -> BB songs do sound as if each and every instrument were played via piano, as expected. BUT the ear training module features some bass sound much as played via some string bass ... seemingly the ear training module does have its own midi settings, not accessible to the user, though.
Oh well - a return to factory settings rectified the problem - up to this enigmatic string bass sound in the root with a Pianoteq VSTi, otherwise chords play now as they should. Thanks for the input.
