Some of the lyrics of songs in the mainstream are not that great, and by the second verse they even get worse as somehow the lyricist has ran out of steam.

I asked ChatGPT to write some new lyrics “in the style of Surfin’ Bird”, here’s the beginning of what it gave me, it doesn’t get better after this …

I am looking at this as a helpful tool in getting ideas or creating lyrics though the big downside is as far as I am aware, any content created is the the property of Open AI, so if you have a hit, maybe get ready for a lawsuit. Per ChatGPT itself, this is not the case: If you write lyrics, does OpenAI own the copyright?No, as an AI language model, OpenAI does not own the copyright to the lyrics you write using its platform. The copyright of any creative work, including lyrics, generally belongs to the creator of the work. In this case, the copyright would belong to you as the writer of the lyrics. However, it's worth noting that OpenAI's API terms of service state that you grant them a license to use any content you generate using their platform for research and development purposes. This means that OpenAI may use the content you create to improve its AI models and services, but it does not mean that they own the copyright to your content. Yes I had a good read through T&Cs and was happy to see that we're pretty free to use the content! (not necessarily for lyrics, but for all sorts of things) I'd just add to this one of the usage restrictions at s.2(c)(v) of the terms of use: "You may not represent that output from the Services was human-generated when it is not". ( https://openai.com/policies/terms-of-use) Putting my lawyer hat on (though this isn't my area of law), I'd say this is slightly ambiguous. It doesn't seem to say that you must give express credit to OpenAI or ChatGPT, just that you can't pretend that you (or another human) created them. So, my interpretation is that you could just give no credit at all for the lyrics and probably* be fine. * this is not legal advice

I asked ChatGPT to write some new lyrics “in the style of Surfin’ Bird” I am now surprised to learn that “Surfin’ Bird” itself was not a wholly original composition, but a synthesis of the earlier songs “Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow” and “The Bird’s the Word” by The Rivingtons. You might say that The Trashmen were a primitive AI engine trained on an extremely small data base.
