A friend has an issue where he can select a sound in Kontakt and play it just fine.
He would like to be able to test other sounds from his MO-6 keyboard at the same time.

How can he change the patch on the Yamaha without it sending that patch change over MIDI and making Kontakt change patches, yet still be able to play Kontakt via the MO-6.
In other words he wants the Yamaha to send keyboard performance data, but not Patch Change data via the MIDI out.

My Roland seems to default to this behavior; I can change the patch on the Roland without affecting the patch in Kontakt, yet still be able to hear Kontakt play notes I trigger via the Roland.

Anyone understand this dilemma and have a possible answer?
/It may be something as simple as Performance Mode vs Patch Mode, but I am not much of a Yamaha guy, so I'm kind of lost on where to look.

I struggle with these sorts of issues. I am not very skilled in Midi. I am using Studio One 5 Pro.

I assign the keyboard to separate tracks to get around the midi issues. Having said that, I don't have the keyboard set up, so I am using the Midi patches from the keyboard. If I want a sound from the keyboard, it comes into my DAW on an analog track.

I only assumed your friend is trying to do this through a DAW.

LOL...the manual is only 240 pages. The answer is probably there somewhere.

I can do it on my Nord and on my ESQ-1 but only because I had to learn that at some point and am familiar with it on those models. The common thread is that the setting is likely in some submenu of SYSTEM => MIDI, since that is (on my boards at least) a global setting. There must be a Yamaha forum where this is addressed.

The more they make these boards do, that harder it is to learn them.

I can't help because my entire experience is with Roland. The time lightning took out my Roland, I attempted to use a Yamaha and never did get it working. Luckily, I was able to get another Roland quickly and returned the Yamaha.

There are three separate manuals! The one that is 240 pages has very little on MIDI.

I have Rolands also Matt.

Me three!! I have had a Juno-60, a U20, an MT32 module, and currently have a JU-06a Boutique synth with the manual keyboard attached and an FA-06. I once bought a used Motif 6 and thankfully it had 2 dead keys so I could return it because it made me think I needed to go back to college to learn how to use it. I don't really enjoy long learning curves.

That was my experience with Yamaha too. Complicated when you are used to other synths.
Unfortunately Barry likes Yamaha and has a couple of the MO6's so I'll probably end up driving up there later to see if I can help.
Haven't seen the studio in a couple weeks, so it's as good of an excuse as any. smile

This is the closest thing I could find.

1. Press the [UTILITY] button.

2. Press the [F5] button for “CONTROL”.

3. Press the [SF2] button for “MIDI”.

4. Cursor to “Keyboard Transmit Ch” and use the [DEC/NO] and [INC/YES] buttons to change the channel.

No idea if it is accurate since I don't have a Motif. The way #4 is worded makes me think it may not be right.

Too bad Mike Head hasn't been on the forum since 2021. He has a nice +++ website +++ about his music and Yamaha keyboards.

Barry eventually figured it out, using the aforementioned Utility section.
He had to get out the second (MIDI related) manual and eventually found the solution on page 20 something.
Or maybe it was 220 something .. like I said, they can be pretty complicated.

As a side note, it appears Barry may be able to come with me to HerbStock.
He'll probably add way more value than I, so we got that going for us.
He has to be back to work Monday, so it shortens my plans a little, but at least I don't have to make the trip by myself.
Hope Herb doesn't mind .. we won't stay long or eat much .. and I promise we'll get our pillaging done before we get there.
