The Piano Roll Editor window opens on whatever track is in focus on the Audio Mixer. When there is no track in focus on the Audio Mixer the default is the Piano Roll Editor window opens with the Melody track in focus with the Audio Mixer also placing the focus on the Melody track. You can change the focus of the Piano Roll Editor window either by using the editor's drop down menu or by clicking on a track in the Audio Mixer.
I'm using version 2023 build 1010 but it has worked this way ever since I've used Band-in-a-Box. The key is what track is n focus when you open the Piano Roll Editor window.
