Some Of These Days

Another update of an old public domain classic.

Some Of These Days - Shelton Brooks 1919

Shelton Brooks and "Some of These Days" was brought to Sophie Tucker's attention in 1910 by her maid, who insisted she meet Brooks and hear the song. Tucker instantly recognized its hit potential, performed and recorded many versions throughout the years, and eventually it became her signature song—including landing movie appearances to perform it.

Tucker first recorded the song along with others on wax cylinder format in 1910–11. In 1926, on 78 RPM record format and backed by Ted Lewis and his band, Tucker recorded her classic, million-selling 1926 version, which stayed in the #1 position on the charts for five weeks beginning November 23, 1926, and re-affirmed her lasting association with the song.

"Some of These Days" has been recorded by many other artists, including Ethel Waters, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Bing Crosby, Bobby Darin, Ella Fitzgerald, Diahann Carroll, Judy Garland, Leon Redbone, and recently by Janice Merritt.

Janice – Vocals and arrangement.
I played some guitar and arrangement.
Bud recorded Janice and mastered the track.

Some of these days
You'll miss your honey
Some of these days
You'll feel so lonely
You'll miss my hugging
You'll miss my kisses
You'll miss me, honey
When you go away

(Scat & Guitar)

I feel so lonely
Just for you only
For you know, honey
You've had your way
And when you leave me
I know you'll grieve me
You'll miss your little honey
Some of these days

Peter, Janice & Bud,

This song was a real treat! In the late 1970s I worked at a radio station out on the east end of Long Island, NY. I always used to play the Darin version from his "Darin at the Copa" album. I have not thought of this song in years.

Love the version you guys have put together. An absolutely awesome vocal by Janice - just perfect! The track selections are stellar and fit great with your guitar.

Bud, as always, mixes to perfection! A clear and punchy sound that really brings this one home.

LOVED IT!

Bob

Thank you Bob! And I’m happy it brought back memories. I’ve enjoyed versions of it all my life. I was delighted when Peter suggested this “jump blues” style. Thanks again for the kind comments.

Janice

PS Bud wanted to mention that Peter handled the mixing while Bud mastered the result. smile

YEOW!! Saw this one listed and couldn't wait. Nobody does it better than you three. Great acoustic solo, terrific arrangement. I'm really loving the collection of PD songs you guys are doing. Each one, including this, is better than any other recording before it. Seriously. Love the feel of this. Everything is so good from upper left to coda.

Enjoy whatever happens!

I've never heard the original, but I would have guessed it was from the 1920s. Sounds authentic.

Great upbeat vibe and of course fantastic work by all involved.

Oh, and I LOVE the "vocal" solo or whatever you call something like that smile

So cool! Everything fits the era and mood of the song. Janice's scat singing and the intentional breaking of her voice in a few places are really special. And the piano track puts the perfect icing on the project. And Peter's guitar is spot on (isn't it always?).

Very nice, folks! A most enjoyable listen!

Alan

Bouncy and driving!

Great vocals, and some tasty guitar playing as well!

I could tell Bud didn't do the mix because the FX chains weren't listed in the notes. wink

Nice work, all! laugh

Thanks for the positive and supportive review! And, hey, that “solo singing” is called “scatting” and was popularized by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald … way back smile
