I have been reluctant to go out on Face Book. What security options could I use to make it a safe thing to do?

It's a great networking tool but the people behind it don't believe in privacy and it shows. You need to assume that anything you post anywhere on Facebook can be seen by anybody-- including your Uncle Ed the minister, potential employers, companies who are compiling profiles on you and your friends for marketing purposes and perhaps governmental agencies (that part doesn't really bother me as I've nothing to hide.) It wouldn't surprise me if the private emails were being scanned as well but I have no evidence of that. Any of those online games and apps that you download access all your info and the info of your Facebook friends. They've also added a function that allows you add your own music to your page but when I went to sign up I felt like they were asking for more access and information then I was comfortable with. Of course, I might be a little paranoid as I've just read this article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/jan/14/facebook

Thanks Jay, that was an excellent article. It makes me even more reluctant to use Face Book.

It seems to me that Facebook is a great place to get personal information - the kind of information that would be useful if one wanted to assume someone else's identity. This may also apply to other sites such as twitter or forums.
Paranoid? I don't think so.

Which is why I refuse to have a Facebook account. My sister bugs me about it, but I am not going to put my personal information out there. I mean, I have a huge online presence, gaming and such, and the virtual world Second Life, but there is some control there. With Facebook, I see none, so I stay away from it.

These are good cautions to consider.

I used to play online games a couple of years ago, that was fun. I tried Second Life, but the whole thing just didn't get me. I never found out what the fun part of that virtual world is. I guess It's just me, but what does one do there?

Facebook is good for intentional advertising in a controlled way. The links and updates can help a promotion program... but for personal use fergetaboutit. Too much effort to control privacy compared to the worries involved.
Just an opinion and an observation..

Mike, For me, Second Life is a chat room that's visual. A friend said I should try it after I had made comments about 'boring, text only chats' and I did. Now, I've found a lot of weird people there, but I've also found some interesting new things that I didn't know about before. I've made some real friends there, too. I think one of the things about SL is that you have to be open minded to a lot of new things, and I try to be. Because of that, I can be accepting of things that I didn't know about, or understand, before I went in there.
In the end, it's a chat room, not a game. People think because it's visual that you 'win' somehow, but that's not what it's all about. For some people, it truly is another life for them.

The one to worry about is your ISP. They have all your information. They have copy of everything you download, which is every move you make. Plus every bit of information about you when you signed up. And if they're asked to turn it over for specific reasons (say the government), they'll do it. Facebook has no more than what you give them. And you don't have to give them anything you don't want them to have. I bet they're reading this post right now. I'm outta here.

Hey, trax. How are you? Good to see you, too, and thanks for your comments.
I get concerned about the security of everything, too. But I'm pretty boring actually and that's good, I guess. Don't think anyone is really concerned about what I'm doing on the Internet.
