I met Chet once, and agree, just a nice, friendly down to earth person. He came into a restaurant/bar we were gigging in. I didn't recognize him, but a waitress tipped me off. When we took a break, after he was done eating, I walked over and introduced myself. He asked me to sit down and we chatted for a while. Just plain old musician 'shop talk'. I remember him saying that all he wanted to do was be a jazz musician, but he knew which side of the bread his butter was on. I figure, in the unlikely event that I become catapulted to stardom, and if I go out in public and didn't want to be recognized, and someone comes out and says, "Aren't you Notes Norton?" I'd replied, "No, but I get that all the time. I WISH I was him, or at least had his money." In my days of opening in concert for, and being in that world, I met quite a few famous musicians. The vast majority were just normal people without big heads. Those that weren't were the minority, but you get that in any walk of life. I think that if fame had found me, I'd be one of the nice ones. BTW, I was playing on a cruise ship, and I went to a music store in Bermuda to pick up a few things, charged it on a credit card, and the guy asked me, "Are you THE Bob Norton of Band-in-a-Box?" I replied, "Guilty as charged." and we had a long chat. He is a BiaB customer, and I gave him my e-mail address and told him if he needed some help, write me. Notes

That death chart is wildly inaccurate. It list the drug of choice reasonably well but not the cause of death. It's a sensationalized piece of click bait.
Robert Quine did die due to a heroine overdose but it was his chosen mode of suicide after the death of his wife. It wasn't a matter of him being a "rock smack head" who became lazy or too addled to know what he was doing.
Lynott was a well know heroine user but septicaemia was the prime cause of his death.
There're loads more but I'll not labour the point.
How would we handle fame?
Are we capable of murder?
Do we really know ourselves?
Is there any point?

rayc, you should at least try to get it right. Lynott actual cause of death was caused by heart failure caused by sepsis and respiratory depression caused by pneumonia.
Septicaemia was the precursor to those events. Opioid use is implicated in sepsis. It is highly likely that the root cause of Lynott's death was opioid addiction which caused sepsis which caused heart failure, and pneumonia, which caused respiratory failure.
There are a good many studies connecting opioid use with sepsis and resulting in death. There is yet to be a complete understanding of this connection.

The point should be pretty clear when referenced to the thread's title.
It matters little if someone's cause of death is listed as suicide, drug overdose, or they died from eating too much ice cream.
Did being a famous musician influence that death, and would those sorts of influences affect you?
We could also produce a chart of musicians who died in plane crashes.
People don't die from plane crashes; they generally die from blunt-force trauma.
There is also the point of discussing issues that seriously affect musicians, as many of us here on this forum are musicians and generally have greater exposure to drug use.
Opioid use is causing the death of thousands of people worldwide. So yes, there is a point to having these discussions.

You make my point for me. Lynott's death, while primarily due to septicaemia, was not an uncomplicated one. The temptation to dramatize death of "rock stars" is strong for obvious reasons. At the time many assumed he'd died of AIDS. Had Lynott fallen off a ladder and the autopsy found very minor traces of opioids in his system the chart wouldn't have placed him let alone put a red ladder beside his name.

So are you saying that I am using subtle, tricky, superficially plausible, but generally fallacious method of reasoning? Are you saying that I am imploying the clever use of arguments that seem true but are really false in order to deceive people?
Or do you simply not know what the word sophistry actually means?

Through the fine line of semantics I am on team Billy here. Nobody dies from "a plane crash". They die from injuries sustained IN the plane crash. Nobody dies from electrocution. They die from the resulting cardiac arrest from getting all that voltage across their heart. Bopper didn't die from a plane crash. He died from injuries sustained in the crash. Fine semantic line, but true. Lynott had sepsis, otherwise known as blood poisoning, but cause of death was pneumonia and cardiac arrest. Did he contract it from dirty needles shooting heroin? Maybe, maybe not, but he didn't die directly from the heroin. So do people die from the contributing factors of the ultimate final event? Also playing into this is that he died in 1986, and to look back with almost 40 years more knowledge of medical science adds a layer of interest.
In the example of the plane crash, if a jet engine tosses a blade, which explodes an engine, which takes out the hydraulics making the plane unflyable and the plane ultimate hits a mountain, somebody somewhere will say cause of death was metal fatigue in the blade.
On topic, I know that with the addictive personality that I have, the lifestyle involved with large amounts of money to spend on vices, I would have been gone by 35. All I could afford was alcohol, and I did my best to kill myself with it until I woke up in 1993 and admitted I had a problem. There was that fine line between alcoholic and party animal. I don't know which side of that line I was on, but I do know that quitting was a very wise move. When you get up to drinking a case of beer every day a rotted liver can't be far behind.
