Full Time Blues

In reply to a comment I made on one of Mario's songs, he suggested I post a few of my/our older songs. Many of them I cannot because they were created and recorded using a different music creation program.

Just a question: If I simply added an RT or Drum Track from BIAB to those songs, would that be considered "gaming" the forum? If so, I'll discard that idea.

Most of them I cannot redo in BIAB as some of them have rhythms and bass tracks for which BIAB has nothing even vaguely similar. And those songs are fully dependent on those rhythms and specific bass lines.

Anyway, this is one Di sand I wrote back in 2011 using BIAB v 11.5. I no longer have the file with the track info, but I assure you every track is from BIAB. That will probably be obvious.

I did all the vocals, including two harmony parts (I'm not a very accomplished harmony singer) and the "ooooooh"s. I was new at mixing then. The vocal is a tad too loud, and the drums could have been just a little more forward in the verses. But I thought the piano track came out pretty decently.

Lyric

Full-Time Blues

©2011 Alan D. David, BMI / Diana Bowers, BMI

(v)
Why must I love you, why can't I say goodbye
Every time I try to leave, I can't and I don't know why
My mind tells me it's time to go, but my heart just won't comply
This constant war torments me, every day I live a lie

CHORUS
A tangled web of heartache, a case of full-time blues
No color in my rainbows, just the darkest hues
I know I ought to move along, I'm reading all the clues
But here I sit with the full-time blues

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

(v2)
I pack my suitcase, every morning in my mind
Thinking how I'll say goodbye, and leave you here behind
But when it's time to play my part, no courage can I find
I always end up speechless, and my memory goes full blind

CHORUS
A tangled web of heartache, a case of full-time blues
No color in my rainbows, just the darkest hues
I know I ought to move along, I'm reading all the clues
But here I sit with the full-time blues

(v3)
I guess I'll always, be here by your side
Smiling on the outside, but crying deep inside
I'll learn to live with, these feelings I must hide
My head no longer matters, it's my heart I must abide

CHORUS
A tangled web of heartache, a case of full-time blues
No color in my rainbows, just the darkest hues
I know I ought to move along, I'm reading all the clues
But here I sit with the full-time blues

Nice! Very captivating and easy to listen to. I enjoyed this one but then i'm a blues guy. Nice backing track too. The next song is awesome as well, you are very good at this.

Alan,

The rhythm and vibe are so cool. You have a great voice for this music - you should sing more.

I think the mix is great - really supports your vocal.

I completely enjoyed this.

My vote is to add a BIAB track to your other older songs. Would be great to hear them.

Thanks a bunch, Rick. I appreciate that. I experiment quite a bit with chord patterns and RT combinations. I'm a lead guitarist by trade. Played Country primarily - made a very good living doing so. We played whatever was contemporary at the time plus some classics. However, over the past 20 years or so (I'm 76 years old) I've gravitated to Smooth Jazz and R&B. Still p[lay quite a bit of Country, though.

I lived in California most of the 90s (Bakersfield), but never got as far north as Bella Vista (Merle Haggard area for his later years). Sacramento and Truckee are about as far north as I got.

Again, many thanks. I'll be watching for later posts from you.

Alan

Hi Bob ./..

Thanks for the time to listen and comment so kindly. I consider myself an adequate singer, at best. I appreciate all the nice comments.

I'll wait and see what more people have to say about adding a BIAB RT to an existing, non-BIAB song.

Many Thanks, my friend...

Alan

Alan,

A nice rhythm to this. Strong chorus.
Tracks are nicely done.
The vocals are dominating the mix, yes (making the piano seem too-far-back).

This is a forum to Showcase BIAB. So any use of BIAB that "adds to a production" is fair game - even if that is just one instrument.
If using BIAB allows you to add a sax solo or guitar solo or pedal steel or fiddle that you would not otherwise have, then THAT is a reason to have BIAB (which every songwriter/produce OUGHT to have!) and a reason to Show-It-Off in the Showcase.
Go for it.

The way I read the rules, a single RealTrack or MIDI file from BIAB is enough to qualify for posting here.

Your song is pretty good, in fact it's one of my favorites of yours.

I think the drums are just right. If you make the piano a little louder in the parts where you sing, it should go well with your vocals and make them seem less dominant.

Hi Floyd ...

Thanks for the input. Your word is good enough for me. I feel I've learned quite a bit about mixing in the many years I've been here. Too bad I wasn't as informed when I put this one together. But, like life, music is an ever-ongoing learning process.

Again, thanks a bunch. Best to you ...

Alan

A) very cool song...great to hear YOU.
B) I've posted a song constructed in BIAB but with no BIAB tracks remaining & I've posted an old song with a RealDrum track added.
Fair play.

Hi B.D.

Glad you liked the song. It was one of the first 6 or 8 tunes I recorded using BIAB.

I no longer have the original tracks, so I can't change anything. But I agree with your fix. And thanks for your input about the BIAB tracks for posting.

G'Day Ray ...

"Cool song". I'll take that. Thanks! And I appreciate your input about posting with just a single BIAB RT. Everyone who has offered an opinion says to "go for it", in one way or another. So, I'll be looking into which songs I can re-render as such.

Have a great day ...

Alan

Alan...I really enjoyed this...so great to hear lyrics (especially well written ones) with one of your compositions...love the Basa nova feel to this number...you're right the piano is excellently done...really good vocal work...I think adding a BiaB instrument(s) along with an existing track helps show and advertise the coolness of BiaB and should be part of the forum's value and appeal...old songs are not old to those of us who have never heard them...great work!...Dan

Hi Greg ...

It's always great to hear from you. Glad you enjoyed it!

And yeah, it's a rather uncommon arrangement for a Blues song. But I kinda liked it. Glad you did, too! Thanks for the well-wishes. Hope all is fine with you and yours. Take care, my friend.
