Another W.I.P.
I started this at the beginning of the month and it's progressing reasonably well.
There's a decent chance the original Pygmy Beat singer will sing this one which is cool IF it eventuates.
For the moment I've done a draft vocal to test the lyric & melody.
Written and drafted in BIAB.
Of that BIAB draft only

RealDrum NashvilleEven8^8 a & b
Cello 2456
&
Strings 2457
remain.
I've added guitars, Bruno Royal Artist - semi acoustic six string single coil, through a Marshall, a couple with a trem pedal, one track through a VoxinaBox.
Knockhofner bass via a Behringer BDI21
Vocals, as they were a draft, through a cheap Behri dynamic mic, hand held & sung quietly sitting at the desk.
This was a rarity in that the lyrics came well after the backing and only a snatch of melody preceded them.
I'm looking forward to any/all commentary. Suggestions elsewhere are that the bass is too loud & the guitars not bright enough.

Spaghetti Puppets wip

LYRICS:
The Spaghetti Puppets

V1 No, there's nothing to say,
When your mind's made up,
It's down to you.
No, no reason to stay,
For me & you

C1 The age of entitlement,
Eclipsed the age of enlightenment.
The age of conspiracy,
Eclipsed the age of you & me.
It comes - to this. It's down to you.

V2 No, there's nothing to do,
When the time is up,
It's up to you.
No, you know that it's true,
The truth we knew.

C2 The age of entitlement,
Eclipsed the age of enlightenment.
The rage for conspiracy
Eclipsed believability.
It's come - to this. For all we knew.

V3 No, there's nothing to change,
When the jig is up,
There are no tricks.
No, now reason is gone,
We cannot fix.

C3 The age of entitlement,
Eclipsed the age of enlightenment.
The ageing conspiracy
Eclipsed the grasp of history.
It's come - to this. Nought we can do.

C4 The age of entitlement

The age of conspiracy

It's come - to this.

Ray,

I like this - it has a very hypnotic & mysterious vibe.

That single coil guitar has a tremendous sound. It really propels the arrangement and becomes a great centerpiece.

Never mind elsewhere -the bass should be louder. Of course you'll discount that opinion considering the source, right? Yes, the guitar sounds good. Vocals actually sound pretty good (although not loud enough), and you handheld the mic at your desk. Good range on the vocal, too. I really like the lyrics, too.

Nice.

A good write. Changes to that 4th line (chorus) are really nicely done.

Backing sounds good. Holds together.
I like your vocals. They work. (almost loud enough).
My ear kept wanting some kind of pad-ding - through much of it. Strings? (there are a couple of nice snippets) or Organ? BIG Strings could be a dramatic addition...
The quartet bit is a nice touch.

Well along on this.

Hi Ray ...

I think you have some really good bones for a finished project. And yes, as usual, your vocal could be somewhat louder. I agree with Floyd's suggestion of some big strings or a (biting - my thought) organ.\

Your vocals are always much better than you suggest they are. Might I suggest a little more high EQ on the drums?

You're off to a running start - I would speculate not too far from a finished effort.

Sounding better than really good! I would guess you're not far away from finishing this. I predict it will be spectacular!

Ray,
"progressing reasonably well" Ohh yes. You sir are on a roll. Very cool arrangement!! Blend of instruments, FX, effective stops, everything works very well. Lyrics & vocals are perfect for this. If it was me, I would bump vocals 3-5db and STOP. Send it for mastering. Good one!
Thank you for sharing,
Misha.

The lyrics are good, and the song is interesting enough to keep me listening until the end.

My only complaint is that _everything_ sounds restrained, there is no leading instrument/vocal to give the song a direction, to take me by the hand and lead my way.
(I hope my explanation makes sense)

Thanks Bob,
I love that guitar...I bought it in 78 & replaced it, when stolen in 2002 or so, with two so I'd not go through that loss again. Late 60s narrow bodied semi acoustic with a great feel & sound. I even have three spare pickups.

Thanks Marty,
I was going to post a mix with a louder vocal but the system won't allow me to place it in the O.P. The louder vocal is quite awful aside from my voice - lots of noise, rumble etc. so if Terry doesn't end up singing it I'll have to re track properly.

Ta Floyd,
The 4th chorus changes came to me very early and I had to remember them...hard at my age.
I did have some padding in the mix but it sounded crowded, a little claustrophobic even - which sort of fitted the narrative but the difference without it was, to my ears, leaner.

Hello Alan,
I've boosted some of the existing strings after reading your suggestion.
I've touched up the drums but can't post the update.
Thank you.

You're, as ever, very kind Misha.
I tried your vocal boost but, as explained in my response to Marty, the actual recording is far too poor to survive the boost. I'll hope that Terry comes through.

Thanks B.D.,
The vocal, as explained in the O.P., is a draft and of very poor technical quality so is quiet. The lead instrument - the trem guitar of the intro/solo/outro is fairly solid at this point.
It is a "restrained" song though...there's no canter or gallop let alone race to the end. In this instance the song dictated the pace as it developed.

Hi, Ray.

Looks like I missed this one. It's very much got your style all over it.

My only thought is that same drum beat through the song homogenizes everything. I assume it's either a placeholder, or the incessant beat is reinforcing the subtext of the song. wink

It's coming along very well, other than the suggestions others have made nothing really sticks out to me.

Look forward to the final production.

There is drum variation in the chorus...a matter of intensity of hit and the hi-hat going from closed to open. It's subtle and the chorus is busier. I'll raise the HH level a bit. Thanks.
Thanks

I liked the song.
The backing band is excellent.
The vocal is good but just not loud enough for me.
The lyrics are super, thanx for listing them.

Please Ray you have a good voice so don't be afraid to be up front.

Thanks Mario,
This vocal was pretty much a 1st take while working out the melody and "Vocals, as they were a draft, through a cheap Behri dynamic mic, hand held & sung quietly sitting at the desk." The original Pygmy Beat singer is going to do the vocal - ACE!

Ray,

Really cool start man.

Does the Spaghetti in the title come from the Spaghetti Western sound?

That threw me a bit, intriguing though.

I am not sure I ever know what Spaghetti Puppets means.

Maybe your "brand" is to have things a little more "impressionist" art than your typical straight forward pop song??

smile
