Remember in this situation you are often hearing 2X the actual delay. The delay it takes for your voice to get to the other end, come out of the speaker, and come back to you .... plus when on 'speaker mode' most phone level systems have a cut-in/out factor to eliminate feedback that may be adding to the delay.
