BassThumper, when Gordon Scott mentions valves he is referring to vacuum tubes. I am ... is that a British English vs American English difference? I guess so. Quite a lot of software will simulated the effects of vacuum tubes, cabinets, tape saturation and the like. One doesn't necessarily have to have the real thing in the chain to get a similar effect, though cab-to-guitar feedback is likely still best done the traditional way. That, though, is a whole different discussion. for some other thread, some other time.
Jazz relative beginner, starting at a much older age than was helpful.
