Life Between the Pages
Phil Leith (7/23)

Staring at the bottom of a glass
Life is going nowhere fast
Dreams all seemed to vanish in the sky
I'm crying out but there is no reply

I can hear the calling of the sea
But there's still music inside of me
Does it even matter if I try?
If no one really cares to ask me why?

Where do I find meaning you may ask?
Life between the pages turning fast
It's not just paper flying by until you reach the end
But the stories with your family and your friends

Staring at the mountain range before me
Testifying to eternal glory
What if it is just another place to be?
Would it even matter if I wasn't here to see?
Maybe all that matters - is it matters to me

============

Song about realizing the good things in life are slipping away if we don't make the effort to look.

A conglomeration of inspirations. One of which is grandchildren growing too fast, the approaching last few months of the magic 0-5 years with our granddaughter. Lack of any enthusiasm for my music in my, ahem, immediate family. Many lines have multiple meanings. Needing to do more things with my wife here in our later years. Get out, get living.

Phil...I love the track you've created and your guitar playing is superb....the song reminds me of something John Denver might have recorded...yeah, I think you hit some of the thoughts all of us grandparents think...the lyrics are top-notch and the melody is so nice! great job from where I sit...really enjoyed!

John Denver ... well that *is* high praise. Thank you. John, Gordon Lightfoot, and Jimmy Buffett are probably my three biggest singer/songwriter influences.

Hi Phil,
Earing the first notes of your melody, I've thought to the City of New Orleans sung by Arlo Guthrie. But I must say you've your own style, an excellent voice and the whole is very well mixed.
Kudos to you.

Well said, Phil. Really well said, and wonderfully presented. Yep, I hear your influences from Denver, Lightfoot and Buffett, and I also hear your influences from grandchildren and wife. Loved it.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Yep, it's a well-used chord progression.

A friend of mine came up with a song all about this phenomenon.

Hi, Phil.

Nice folk sound! I also go a strong "City of New Orleans" vibe - not derivative, just in the same vein.

I know that "lack of enthusiasm" from family feeling. I'm glad you see you posting here! laugh

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Phil, I also got the Arlo Guthrie and John Denver vibe from this one.

It is great that one like yourself can write lyrics that most people can relate.

Great vocal and mix.

Forget BiaB and keep finger picking that guitar yourself. You are very good at it.

Phil,

A nice live-life-to-the-fullest folk song.

It's a pleasant sounding song, Phil. I like the uncomplicated tracks.

I can empathise with some of your lines although there are a couple that could be reworked (Isn't that always the case though for all of us).
E.G: "Staring at the bottom of the glass" has been used in a few songs and being a first line stands out more than if it were a second or third line.

The second verse, "I can hear the calling of the sea." Why is that if it's a song about making music?
The line comes over as a distraction to what you really want to do.

As I said, it's a pleasant sounding song but lyric wise it lacks purpose.

I hope you don't take my thoughts the wrong way.
I'm just trying to help and I haven't written a perfect song yet so what do I know? confused

Yep, Phil, we can relate to the “life between the pages turning fast” as lately the days seem to be flying by.

Your smooth vocal and very nice fingerpicking are a perfect fit for the lyric and the RT’s well support it all.

As a recent quote we saw stated, “don’t count the days, make the days count.”
Your song says it eloquently!

We enjoyed the performance video also.
