This is a Studio One question but could apply to other DAWs.

I'm working with drum and guitar audio tracks (not MIDI), recorded from my keyboard. The strum pattern waveform of the guitar is aligned with that of the drums. For the drums, think 1-2-3-4 1-2-3-4 etc.

There is a spot in the song where I want the entire band to pause (or stop) for a certain number of beats and then to resume on beat 1.

I know I can cut, paste and align each individual audio track to get this effect but that is tedious.
Is there an "automated" way in S1 (or any DAW) to accomplish this?
I've done a few searches without any luck.

Note: I am not talking about the Stop button on the transport bar. This is about injecting a pause (or silence) on the audio tracks for a given number of beats and then resuming on beat 1.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Deb, just 1 word.
Perfect!

Your video gives me 2 great options to insert the silence.
Ctrl+A then Alt+X+-> works like a charm

My searches came up zero because I was searching for "stop" or "pause" instead of "insert time".
Many thanks.

BT did you originally create any of the track bed in BiaB? I ask because it is simple to do that in biab and then play along to that pattern.

Great to make these discoveries of how powerful these modern DAWs are.

I am a bit surprized that "Stop" didn't lead to:

:...Stop-time, "a musical device in which the forward flow of the music stops, or seems to stop, suspended in a rhythmic unison, while in some cases an improvising instrumentalist or singer continues solo with the forward flow of the meter and tempo" which is a common expression and I think is the effect you are after.

By the way, Reaper uses "insert time".

No. At this stage of my song development I just have a drum track and a strumming guitar both produced on my keyboard as audio and recorded in Studio One.

The skill that Deb alerted me to in the video she shared will pay dividends going forward. I find that half the "battle" with sophisticated software tools is just becoming aware that something can be done. Once you know it can be done, then doing it isn't that hard.

I was hoping someone would broaden this to a music theory level and my instincts told me that there should be a name for this musical object. You're the man Dan, thanks for introducing "Stop-time" into my vocabulary smile

Here is a bold claim that I think might be correct.
Any musical element that one can detect in a piece a music will have a name or concept associated with it.

Is this true?
