As I understand it, Pandora starts with some of my songs and mixes others, but then each user alters it with likes and dislikes.
You understand this correctly. To create a new station, you search their database of artists and select one. Then it will play that artist's songs along with songs from artists that it thinks are similar. In this way, the listener is introduced to songs and artists. With so much music out there, we find this is a great way of being introduced to stuff we've never heard before. You can then repeat and build other stations. I don't believe there is a limit on the number of stations you can create for yourself; we have dozens and dozens. The thumb-up control will force it to play that song more frequently, the thumb-down control will prevent that song from ever playing on that station. We listen to Pandora on our smart TV which I set up with an external 90W/Ch reciever driving a pair of Pioneer towers and a 12" powered sub-woofer. [The speakers built-in to TVs are almost as bad as as what's in your cell phone, and from my experience, the add-on sound bars are also poorly designed.]

Great tune! Reminds me of the Cuban band Irake. Very authentic Afro-Cuban jazz.
