Fragile Man

Here's a tune by my songwriting partner and I. We didn't sing any real vocal (yet) but used Synthesizer-V (Kevin) to generate the lead vocal, and processed it to sound like it does. Will be better with a human vocal, but this is not half-bad for a quick demo, all done by computer!

It uses _DANGLES.STY Dangles Relaxed 70s Soul

“Fragile Man”
Words & Music by Billy Field & Tom Price

If only you knew how easily a heart could break
If only you knew the short time that it could take
Well then you would see exactly the way I am
Then you would see me a fragile man

If there was a way that one could protect their heart
You know I would surely like to make a start
And I would try to do the best I can
But I am only a fragile man

Afraid that I might be left broken
Scared that I might be left blue
Frightened because I know that
I’m falling in love with you

And so if it seems I’m always in full control
And I don’t appear to be so emotional
Well don’t ever get me wrong
Please understand that I am only a fragile man

Afraid that I might be left broken
Scared that I might be left blue
Frightened because I know that
I’m falling in love with you

And so if it seems I’m always in full control
And I don’t appear to be emotional
Well don’t ever get me wrong
Please understand that I am only a fragile man
Yes I am only a fragile man

Billy Field and Tom Price, this sounds like a real singer. Great job on that!
Super backing tracks and mix.

Two thumbs up.

Thanks MarioD - yeah it does "sound" like a real singer. In fact the tone is better than mine (by a long shot.) But the AI bot doesn't have the performance and soul the way I hear the song. Probably with a lot of programming it could be made better, but this was super-easy by just playing in the notes via midi and attaching the words in Synthesizer-V, so I can't complain. I'll try to do something with it a little more soulful in the future.

I'm loving the combination of Synthesizer-V and Band-in-a-Box for demo-ing songs quickly. Billy and I have dozens of songs we wrote and never released or did anything with (like this and the other I just posted) so I'm going to do them all up with BIAB in the next few months.

Hello,
I was going to listen and comment but noted that you've posted a few songs without listening or commenting on the work of others.
How about returning the favour to those who've indulged you thus far?

Cheers

Good idea, thanks for the advice, rayc. I enjoy listening/commenting on postings in a lot other forums (songwriting sites, VI Control, Synth-V Forum and more.) The reason I haven't visited this site regularly is that I haven't used BIAB that much compared to playing/recording my own demos so that is why you've seen very little of me so far. Only occasionally have I got into BIAB, but every time I am amazed at how good it is, but still don't know how to do a lot of things in it, so I am eager to learn and hear what others can do.

Sounds great. Please share your production tips. Your mixes sound so clean, and pro level. Kevin sounds so real, and the harmonies in the bridge is spot on. Good song, great production, mix, and overall a PRO job.

Hi Thomas,

I just commented on a song where 'Kevin' was also involved.
Your Kevin does the singing job a bit better. It had some more emotion so it sounds more realistic.
I also liked the harmony vocals from a double Kevin (?). Very well done.
The melody of the song is very nice, but could use some more excitement in the band.
The mix of the song is very good, cllear intruments and vocals!

It is something else then your other song of the 50's ;-))

Well done,
Hans

I think you did quite well, especially in the chorus the vocals are very convincing.
In the verses I would work a bit more on the prosody, at the moment the vocals are a bit too mechanical.
Production/mix is very good, nothing to complain about [Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]

Yes, I totally agree, its way too mechanical. With Synthesizer V you would have to spend a lot of time to tweak the expression with pitch curves to make it sound human. This was just the direct output with no work, I just played the melody and typed in the words. It's good for songwriting to just hear the melody, but not good enough for a real track or demo without work.

Elliott Kayne, here is the production used:

1) Mixed in Studio One using separate tracks exported from BIAB.
2) Applied two FX from Izotope Production Suite - Neutron for the individual tracks to give the right tone and eq for each instrument, and Ozone on the final mix for a mastering sound, which give clarity to the parts and maximum volume for broadcast on the internet.
3) Reverbs are all EastWest Spaces II. I don't like a lot of swimming verb on vocals, but the vocal setting on this one gives fullness and body without being too noticeable. The drums are on the "drum room" setting and just a bit on other instruments with a "studio room" setting.
4) I applied RVC (Retrieval Based Voice Conversion) to Kevin (from Synthesizer V) to deepen his vocal tone, which normally sounds a bit like a boy-band singer. The harmony part was sung also by Kevin, but I applied a different RVC model so the harmony sounds a bit like two different people.

Mainly, I think what you hear as "clean and pro level" comes from Izotope Ozone, which always makes a mix sound professional in my opinion.

Tom & Billy, I'm becoming a fan of your writing. Kevin is so good. Heard three songs with him just this morning. Yeah, this is really good for a "quick demo." Is it possible to detune the synth voices just a tad here and there, or to rise to notes, to make them sound a bit more real? Love tha harmony. Really well done.

Enjoy whatever happens!

I like the song. Catchy. And the bridge is a pleasing contrast.
Yes the synth voice sounds good, but I agree with you, it doesn't relay the emotion of the lyrics.
Good composition!

Good job with Kevin ... particularly given your info about how quickly it was done.
We've learned from forum posts that it's quite tedious to squeeze out the most emotive output possible.

The write and mix are top bar. Excellent soundstage on our monitors.

Well done!
