Spooky and dark indeed and we love it!

Fun to just kick back and listen … but on to the parsing out stuff. smile

The arrangement is very effective with the build and build down.
The vocal delay works most excellently on the typical fine fj vocal.
The BiaB studio group is excellent — as is the mix.

And the lyric? Wow!
Love this:
“Mississippi knows where your secret goes, down, down, down”

The latter Tony Joe White could’ve had fun with a swampy blues version. smile

Superb!

Nice to hear a bit different, more devilish song for a while. Like the images like "heart as black as tar" and "can't you smell the fire?". Great rhythm and use of fiddle and acoustic guitar to support it is clever, slide ending is very nice. The voice sounds like coming from some feet under or drown in Mississippi, but I guess that's intended "voice inside" effect. I really enjoyed the dark mood.

floyd,

It's a perfect song for Halloween.
Well... swampy anyway.
And a little spooky?...
Yes, that's right.
The lyrics are also very atmospheric.
It's a song of a rather unusual genre for you.
The choice of instruments is also perfect for the song.
Vocals are great as usual.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Thanks, Ron.
The vocal was heavily processed (needless to say). I wanted it to be in-the-mix as opposed to up-front. It gets pushed down pretty hard, but on all the sources I listened on, I thought it was still hear-able. (Though I could imagine it might get "trampled" on some devices...)

Particularly later in the song, starting shortly after the second chorus, maybe as some of the other instrumentation kicks in where it almost gets diminished a tad for me. I'm the only one mentioning it, so It’s most likely just what I’m listening on. Cool tune regardless.

All my best,

Deej

Thanks, Deej.
You and Ron bring up the same point. It was a balancing act attempting to process the vocal to have that "ominous" sound and still having it be understandable (and not too bass-y). One of those things that you get to the point of "that'll have to do". Guess it was not as successful as I had thought.

Floyd...this is one of the finest uses of BiaB I've heard...it's as if you went to the studio with your band (a very good one by the way) and laid down a track you had been playing for years...I love the fiddle and banjo rhythm...your layering and adding the melodic parts of the instruments was masterful....the song itself was gritty and mysterious, swampy and southern in nature and vibe...loved it! (no surprise)

Here is my feedback.

Technical feedback:
  • Excellent mix with a pretty cool use of echo/delay
  • I love the drums
  • Your vocals are a bit too far away/behind the other instruments for my taste. I would increase the dry part of the vocals a bit.

Artistic feedback:
  • Really cool lyrics, I love especially "whiskey in the jar, soul as black as tar" and "but you can't hide from that voice inside".
I guess the latter will be in a future song of mine.
  • I like the dark mood you and Robert create both lyrically and sonically.
  • LOVE the song, even though there's a fiddle AND a banjo in it smile

Needless to say, the vocal processing was a balancing act. One that I might have failed.
Those particular lyrics were Bob's doing. He's a pro.

Hi Floyd ...

Love the swampy sounds with dark undertones. Your choice of instruments adds to the eeriness of the "tortured" ambiance if you know what I mean by that. You and Bob have a great song on your hands!

This would be a good song to hear on the show Justified.

I don't know about Halloween. This is a catchy dark song to be enjoyed all year.

Sounds a little like JJ Cale. Not a bad thing to shoot for. I had fun imagining who wrote what line. I hope Robert is doing well. Great vocal and the production lives up to your high standards. Interesting how well the banjo and the fiddle work so well in a bluesy setting. All around very cool, Tom

Super collaboration! My new favorite of yours. I like dark slow country tunes bordering with gospel. Excellent lyrics and fantastic vocals. Musical bed is solid, but I wish fiddle and banjo to be slower to give it even deeper, swampier feel smile Enjoyed it very much and thank you for sharing.

Maybe it was because of the key, the "swamp" mood, or the type of arrangement, or even the strongly featured fiddle that impacted on me.

These lyrics, the melody, the arrangement and your performance are first class all the way. I loved the chorus, and I loved the way that song ended with verse 1. They tied the whole journey together really, really well.

To my ears, this was the 'toppest' of top-notch listening and then some!

Sounds good.

Music is an expression that is a universal language, Never criticize anybody to harshly. They need time to grow but when they do, they do. Always be kind in what you say and do because the man upstairs is watching.

Wow what and awesome song Floyd. First thing that came to mind was the shack that Lynyrd Skinnard practiced in by the river during the early part of their career. Just loved this.
