I have a little record player with onboard speakers that has RCA outputs. I have a digital speaker with usb input. I’m wondering is there such a thing as an RCA/usb converter or adapter? I need to get better sound quality but don’t want a big bulky amplifier speaker system due to space. Anyone have any suggestions?

Welcome to the Forum.

Oh yes, these exist. Before I or others find something for you, can I clarify:

I assume your speaker is what is called a powered speaker (it has an amplifier and volume control). Correct?
Do you have two speakers you want to use, or just one?
And what exactly is that "USB input"? Is it a cable with a plug on the end with USB A (the typical flat end) or something else like USB C? And in the speaker, is there a cable with plug or a 'hole' into which you plug a USB cable?
Is your record player stereo, i.e. does your record player have two sets of red and white RCA line outputs?

And I'm curious, does your question have anything to do with PG Music software products? If not, we can still try to answer it.

Also not sure what "I need to get better sound quality" means. It means you want better speakers? Bigger speakers? You want to get the sound into the computer?

The USB cable is for plugging your device into your computer.

If you just want better speakers, buy some Pioneer DJ powered speakers on Amazon.

There are RCA->USB interfaces. I don't know if they will give you better sound quality, though.

You would have to make sure the USB interface can handle speaker output.

Even with better speakers, you are at the mercy of the cartridge and internal electronics of the record player. If they aren't Hi-Fi, there will be nothing you can do to improve it.

Right. There is still too much info we don’t know.

Right again. But it’s only a day, so let’s see.

About record player quality, you and I probably think about an AR turntable requiring RIAA equalization into a nice Kenwood etc. amp (I still have this, with Pioneer speakers).

Or we think about a one-foot square device you could fry an egg on that kids had in the bedroom, and would quickly grind an LP record to death. No line outputs of course.

But what I don’t know is how good recent turntables are, and what outputs they have, given the resurgence of LP records with audiophiles. This audiophile still has the original equipment so I never checked it out.

My turntable has the RIAA preamp built in. It's switched off, since I still have a Phono input in my preamp/amp. If the RIAA switch is activated, it goes into the AUX input. It's a nice feature since so many amps no longer have a Phono input. It also has a USB1 port, to record directly into a computer.

A record player without an RIAA preamp will sound tinny and horrible. As Notes ah… noted, you can buy one with the preamp built in (there will be an on/bypass switch somewhere) or an outboard pre.

Behringer makes a cheapo U-PHONE UFO202 USB phono pre that gets the job done. ART makes the USB PHONO PLUS, a really nice one for a lot more money. These don’t plug into your interface via USB—they are the interface. Both also have RCA outs if you want to plug them into an interface II have one of each). This all assumes a moving magnet cartridge on the turntable. Neither will handle the low output of moving coil cartridges.

Other than that, there are a few hundred analog RIAA phono preamps on the market ranging from $15 to $15,000 and up.

Maybe it is for only playing little records?

Two comments about the original post:

1) Apparently it was a hit and run. Perhaps a disciple of Ivan? It’s about the right time in the semester.

2) How is it that someone can show as ‘unregistered’ and post here? One post. No profile.

Good points, Matt.

I wonder if PGM have unregistered the user since, but the thread remains available because there has been input posted from other users.

Ivan? Hmmm, one never knows.

I would strongly advise you to have RIAA equalization/preamping before you go into your speakers, powered or not. Not just for the sound but to protect the HF drivers from being fried. We once had a very popular FM Broadcast DJ go through our PA without our permission on our off-night and he fried every HF driver (all heavy-duty EV) in our Community Light & Sound stacks. He knew he did it and the club knew he did it, so when we demanded they pay, they did. We never again worked that club or any place that DJ worked---their machinations. No good came of it except that we were made whole equipment-wise. Also, a friend of mine was nicely augmenting his service fees by replacing HF drivers in church installations after DJs abused the house systems. He was Christian enough to let them know what happened and how to prevent a re-occurrence.

We all have been had again! Where is the OP?
Look at the original post, unregistered, no posts, and no profile.
How did that happen?
Is that possible PGM?

I think most of us thought the post was probably just silly or a prank, but as we usually do, we gave the benefit of the doubt and tried to help anyway.

Edit: The original post was by a registered account, but I think with only one post. Presumably PGM removed the poster but not the thread.

I suspect that they didn't remove the thread because other posters had already provided input.
