The original "Venus Walks" I composed as an interesting but non-intrusive soundtrack for a graphics video of the same title back in April. That, like this version, has each section begin with 3/4 time, then switches to 4/4. I next created a 2nd very different version, though the same chord structure, for a sea-based nature video which was also a purely soundtrack instrumental, but that was done in 4/4 time throughout. For this non-soundtrack piece I went back to the 3/4 and 4/4.

Drums: Soaring Power Ballad w/ Guitar Solo ~ Shannon Forrest
Bass Guitar: Country Rock Guitar Solo Pop Ba ~ Tobin Frank
Rhythm Guitar 1: Country Rock Guitar Solo Pop Ba ~ Darin Favorite
Rhythm Guitar 2: Jovian Divine Alt Rock Soloing ~ Mike Durham
Organ: Country Rock Guitar Solo Pop Ba ~ Gene Rabai
Guitar Solo: Rose To You Country Ballad Solo ~ Johnny Hiland
Piano Solo: Giggle Rumba Pop AC Piano Solo ~ John Jarvis
Piano 2: Soaring Power Ballad w/ Guitar Solo ~ Blair Masters
Fiddle Solo: Modern Celtic Reel Fiddle Solo - Andy Leftwich
Marimba: Cay Island Steel Drum ~ Todd London

180 bars; 3/4 & 4/4, Em; tempo 110; Time 6:20

Jay, nice job using BiaB to create a very nice instrumental despite the long-ish format. Not easy! Nice choices for the soloists. Switching time signatures gives the song an edginess that I like a lot. Well done!

Thanks Ron! Yes, the signature change is what makes it work. If you see on YT or hear on CS the 2nd version, "Venus Walks V2: Venus Ripples" which is 4/4 only you'd think it has no connection to this one.

I'm just writing here to put this post back to the top of the thread as I've only had 1 comment on it, when I expected I'd get more on the mix - one of my favourites - than on any of my other posts. Maybe it's the length of the instrumental that hindered the clicks.

I'm sure the 6+ minute doesn't help, as well as it being an instrumental composed entirely in BiaB.

You've done a good job with this, and the 3/4 to 4/4 switching is effective.

That said, for any "pure" BiaB song to keep interest for an extended period without adding some of your own material is tricky, because there's the danger of sounding like you're stringing together solos.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

That is a well done all BiaB production.
The timing changes and choice of soloists help maintain engagement.
It definitely has a cinematic nature!

Much fun in this flight, Chay. Great use of BiaB. Love that piano solo and the fiddle. Interesting Ai images in the video. Hmmm... I wrote an instrumental in 1970 called Minus One Toot Suite where each section was changed. The first movement grouped 3/4 and 4/4 measures, the 2nd used 4/4 & 5/4, then 5/4 and 6/4, and ended with 6/4 & 7/4. All the notation has been lost, but maybe you could take up the cause. laugh 7-9-11-13

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thanks for the reply dcuny, but re "... for any "pure" BiaB song to keep interest for an extended period without adding some of your own material is tricky, because there's the danger of sounding like you're stringing together solos", I don't consider that to be a fair comment, because the very basis of any song or instrumental is the composition and all of my instrumentals, including the instrumental versions of 2 my very old songs (one from the 70s, one from the 80s) are 100% my own original and copyrighted compositions. So whether or not I play anything or sing in them, have other live musicians play or sing in them with or without a BiaB part or parts, have an individual band or orchestra play the music, etc, etc, it doesn't take away from the composition being the all important basis. Without a composition no-one has anything. There are persons out there, musicians and non-musicians, who consider using any part of BiaB in a recorded song or instrumental to be cheating, but BiaB samples are just like having a field of various forms of garbage, which is just garbage on its own, but an artist or architect can enter that field and create something new and original from it. So once again, the composition is all important as without that one just has a field of crap. I also think that BiaB bosses would be quite pleased that someone's creating entire good compositions with their product as it's very good advertising for them.

As regards "you're stringing together solos", it's also invalid. I've currently over 2 hours of compositions I've created in BiaB and I've had failures as the chord construction in some compositions just hasn't leant itself to solos. I also spend hours selecting the correct solo - I'll often try out in excess of 30 before I find something that I feel fits and that I like, plus I've sometimes had to create hybrid solos 'cutting and pasting' different regenerations of one instrument to get what I want. So anyone just randomly inputting chords and then randomly selecting solos and stringing them together is just going to have a mess. So what I'm saying is that there's an art to everything I compose and then sample, arrange and mix using BiaB alone.

Thanks for the positive response J&B. I like the "cinematic" part of your reply, too, as I'd never have thought of it that way. smile

Thanks again, Marty, but while I'll take using various time signatures as a challenge, I doubt I'll be able to use 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and more and still remain sane at the end of it! grin

Everything sounds good and the mix is spot on.
However I do think the length detracts from a great use of RTs.
YMMV

Chay,

This is the first of your songs I've had a chance to listen to. Nice work on the mix and creativity. I particularly enjoyed the piano lead. The fiddle surprised me, but it works quite nicely. Tip of the hat on a really good production.

Best to you.

Alan

Thanks for another positive response, Mario, but while you and others have all commented on the lengths of my instrumentals I do feel that it's a matter of taste, be it re a pure BiaB track or other material. One of the great joys of my life since I was a teenager has been listening at length to music, be it an old vinyl album, single or double, 45-90 miuntes of an audio tape in one go or whole CDs. A lady friend of mine calls it taking a music bath. In all such I love long tracks of which there are gaziilions longer than mine, including songs or part song part instrumentals like BS&T's "Blues Part 2" or Love's "Revelation". Also, listening to a long track in a mixed playlist comes across differently to when played solo. I also feel that any song or instrumental should be listened to at least 3 times as I've found that tracks I love the first time I hear them I end up loathing after often being played ("Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now" is am example for me as I bought the single right after first hearing it, then a couple of days later I loathed it!). laugh I also mentioned on a different thread that the first couple of times I heard Neil Young's "Zuma" album it totally left me cold, but a few week's later I loved it and still do. I'm shortly to post a just under 6 minute new instrumental and the odds are someoner will say it's too long!
