Hey guys...There's a story to this song and I hope it's not too long..one of my best friends and fellow firefighters Greg Nolta passed away from leukemia in 1995. I had been asked to officiate his funeral as I was his coworker, friend and the Fire Department's Chaplain at the time. As I drove his family home from the hospital we were crossing the Mississippi River from Iowa to Illinois and we saw the bald eagles flying over head. They flourish along the river. In those few moments Greg's family and I got a small respite from our shared pain. I wrote this song when I got home. It was with a broken heart as a prayer for what was lying ahead of me.

My cousin, Gene Simmons (no not that one) whom I have sang with in various groups (through 6 different decades) recorded the vocal for me. It's the only song that he ever sang through as the melody singer (he usually would sing only harmony parts)...I'm biased but I think he did a great job.

So as usual...if you do...thanks for listening...I appreciate your thoughts...Dan

This is a beautiful song and wonderful tribute to your friend, Dan.

I don't want to be comical in any way given the subject matter but I can't believe the singer is named Gene Simmons. That would be like your mother naming you Jimi Hendrix or Ace Frehley. How would you manage to make it through high school???

Anyway, this is a gorgeous and touching song.

Dan, tell Gene that really nailed the vocal!
I could feel his pain.
Outstanding arrangement and instrumentation.
Loved those lyrics.

Thanks, Dan. The story was too short. Man, you're right about Gene's vocal. Chilling emotion. Strings sound great --well, all of the pieces you added are perfectly placed in the mixed and add so much. What a wonderful song!!

Enjoy whatever happens!

Dan,

Very well written. The melody to the chorus is something special.
Gene's vocals are beautiful.
Nice tracks. Good mix.

"Fly like an eagle... when he’s resting on the wind" - terrific image!

Are you always shooting for that 5 minute mark? Bullseye! It did not seem too long...

Beautiful song, and great vocal!! I can relate to the experience you shared. When we spread my dad's ashes on the SF Bay in 2016, we saw some dolphins jumping in the bay. I had been out on that bay 100 times and that remains the only time I ever saw dolphins. Great song! Take care. Greg

Really nice song. Perfect vocals. Dramatic arrangement that suits the song perfectly. Key modulations can be tricky, but this one was really dynamic. The callback vocals near the end were cool, too. You might be able to improve this, but if you did, I wouldn't enjoy it more. FWIW, my son is a firefighter, and those who chose to do this service are my heroes.

His vocals are amazing, not just his voice, but the feeling he puts into them.
A sad but very beautiful song, and really good arrangement.

Hi, Dan.

Lovely arrangement - ranging from intimate to majestic. Nice touches everywhere.

Gene's go a nice voice - enough like yours that I keep thinking "What's up with Dan's voice?".

Solid write as well.

I'm guessing your handle "Firesong" comes from being a firefighter?

Excellent song. smile

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Hey David thanks for your comments...BTW when my Gene Simmons was in high school the famous 'Gene Simmons' was also in high school and his name was not Gene Simmons then (his birth name was Chain Witz)...my guy had the name first smile Dan

Gene’s vocal is certainly perfect for a lead vocal and his heartfelt performance projects both the sadness and the optimism of the lyric.

These lines stood out for us:

“I want to rise to meet the morning sun, give of my heart till the race is run.”

Well done,
J&B
