This is a setting in some programs like Pro Tools. In Reaper, look for a "BPM basis" setting. I've found that by default some DAWs treat a quarter note as the beat in 12/8 and 6/8 time, which doesn't make sense musically and means that the tempo would need to be 1.5x faster.
