I started with Audacity years ago. It's undergone a lot of changes since then. I started using Cakewalk some years back as I preferred its real-time effects and editing, but I still use Audacity for simple edits and file format conversion. The latest updates for Audacity have been impressive.
I have version 3.42, and the updates are nice. It's getting pretty close to being a basic DAW. Like you, I've been using Audacity for years and it accommodates most of my mixing needs. And yes, format conversions are quite handy. I belong to one site that only accepts MP3s and I save most of my stuff as Wave files. Pretty handy!
I just used audacity to change the tempo of a guitar track and it was amazing. Very cool. Previously I would have had to record it again or try to get something from BB that wouldn't have been the same. Now, a single function and a couple of seconds and it's done.
