This song will probably make more sense if you've read or seen the classic literary works described within. Hope you enjoy it and thanks for listening and adding your comments. Lyrics are within the SoundCloud description.

Love the song and the original lyrcis idea. Great voice too!

Hi, Dewey.

Clever write with a catchy chorus. smile

Nice arrangement and mix, and of course, well sung.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Oh, you are so wrong, Dewey. This song is terrific and quite understandable even though I'm not familiar with the literary works upon which it was based. The only one I recognized was Old Yeller.

Very catchy hook, and you sing it so well. A really good write and presentation.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Rockin' tune! I don't know the literary references either but the title stands on its own to me. Great vocals and a rollicking band suit the song perfectly. Great job!

Dewey,

Nice vocals. And a good BAND.
The vocal could be tucked-in the mix more. (to my ear) it sounds like the Band is all together (in the same space), but the vocal "rides above that" (giving a sense of "in a different space"). Just a bit.

Floyd, thanks for listening and the feedback. I'm sure there are lots of details in the process of getting my vocals and band in the same space. But I'll ask anyways...do you have a recommendation on how to accomplish this? I feel this is an issue with a lot of my mixes but I have no idea what I'm doing to be honest with you.

(Opinion - they are all subjective).

"Vocals in a different space" is not a big deal (typically). You are actually "close".

Often when a single element (in this case the vocal) "sticks out" (that is an exaggeration), it is because the Mixing Guy is keying on that element. I would guess, as a songwriter (first), the lyric (therefore vocal) is what you are "keying on" so you naturally have a tendency to keep that "the focus".
That typically means it's simple "too loud" (again "loud" is relative - and an exaggeration).
I'd start by lowering the vocal by 2 dB (that's a guess - 1 or 3 or 1.5 might be the right amount). That might be all you need. Like I said, you are close.
Then a bit more reverb (not Crazy reverb) and (perhaps) a touch of delay on the vocal would get it "in the mix".
The focus-thing happens a lot with guitar players when they first start mixing. The guitar are King!
It's just a matter of training your ears to recognize when you might be doing that.
Having a reference track can help (and be VERY surprising). Pick a song similar to what you want Your Sound to be and load a copy in your DAW. Solo every so often and compare to Your Mix. The first time I did that was with a Garth Brooks track. I could not believe how Buried and Muffled his vocals sounded compared to what I was mixing. Which meant that My Vocal was too bright and too up-front. So I experimented from there.
The realization is the most important part.
The rest is practice.
And creativity.

Dewey,

Really fun song and great lyrics.

On the mix question:

Here is what I do, FWIW.

If a song has vocals in it, I assume the vocals are most important and the band comes second.

So to start, I create my own reference track by sending all instruments, everything except the vocals, to an instrument bus, and create a mix of that bus independent of the vocals until I get to point where I like the mix.

Then, with only the vocals tracks (multiple) remaining as a direct send to master, I place the vocals where I think they should be against the bed and work the faders on the vocals accordingly, without touching the instrument bed once it is set.

THEN, after those envelopes on the vocals have been created, I will go BACK to the instruments to see whether I need to move any instrument up or down anywhere in the instrument bed mix, now that the vocals are in.

Doing it this way, I am able to get a vocal them seems to sit "organically" in the mix, while achieving the goal of vocal on top without sounding like they are "two rooms."

So far, I have been getting good feedback on my mixes and the way things fit and sit.

Maybe that will help. It is only my way, I am sure there are other ways.

Dewey, what a fantastic hook! Loved it!
Great vocal and backing band.

You have some great advice on mixing vocal. One thing I will add is to use the same reverb for all of the tracks that need reverb. Having different reverbs can make instruments/vocals seem in a different room/place. YMMV

Hi Dewey,

I really liked your song. the lyric is clever and the backing tracks work perfectly with the style. Floyd already mentioned about the vocal beibng just a tad too mich up front and had great suggestions and comments about the mixing process he uses.

All said an excellent song that was a joy to listen to.

Alan

Hey Dewey....this is obviously an original idea...in fact it's the first song I've ever heard with the word rabies in it and most likely the last...but you handled this delicate subject very maturely and with the tender compassion that was needed as to protect the innocent victims of this common malady (or is it melody?) smile very clever lyrics! the discussion between you and Floyd interested me because this is one of the most difficult aspects of mixing a home recording...how do you get everything in the same space, keep the lyrics hearable and yet get the singer onto the stage with the band? I like Floyd's advice and am certainly glad for the info...original concept and great performance!

Floyd, this is excellent feedback! Life has gotten in the way but I'll try your suggestions here (and about lowering the db a couple notches on the vocals and adjusting the reverb).

Na zdrowie and thank you for your honest feedback which can only make me better!!

David, this is great stuff, brother! I'm printing out the tips you and Floyd gave me and will start training myself to make a better mix of vocals and instruments. Thanks for listening and the great feedback!

That’s a really good country rocker.

Love the piano, the whole band, the vocals and the clever write.

Enjoyed it!

Love the title/hook.

Those first two lines are really funny and true. My sister is a physician's assistant, and she complains about patients who google their symptoms and tell her their diagnosis.

Good vocal take. Catchy tune.
