Contrary to the story in the link ... yes. But it is not easy by any means.

Herb,

I actually read the entire article, and googled to see if references to certain primitive hierogylphics on tour buses was real or fake news.

They are. Not fake news at all. Real news. Why did I not trust my gut??? It made me feel like such a.....well, you know.

Maybe it is just because this was written by the British, but the level of trailer trash they are describing here is frightening. I spent a lifetime trying to cover up the fact that I was raised redneck. I spent my whole life lying, and saying, "Oh no, I actually grew up in a boarding school at Heathcliff upon Stratford, and was classically trained in violin as a two year old."

This has made me entirely re-think if I want my name associated with this town in any shape, form or fashion.

If I only had this article to go on, I would probably say no, I am a classical composer from Prague and I worship my new home town of Vienna, where we play the harpsichord and keep our private parts, well, private.

I'm really not entirely sure why it was on a British newspaper's website.
The Guardian is a weird newspaper anyway, IMHO.

The article touches on some of the grimmer characteristics of the "new" Nashville, but geez, making it as a songwriter there has always been hard. Maybe it's harder now. Maybe bachelorette parties have something to do with that. But I doubt it...

DC,

I googled to see whether those giant and primitive but graphically carved totem pole like objects described in the bachelorette parties were really carried on flatbed trucks down Broadway.

Sure enough, they are.

You can see pictures.

In all their golden Aztec glory.

I have 50 song titles now, and am prepared to challenge you or anyone else to a little contest.

Who can write the best commercial, high quality Nashville song about a giant...

Let me know when you are ready to become controversial here on the forum, because apparently people think we need more boundaries pushed, that we are playing it too safe.

If anyone wants to push more boundaries and cause people to really clutch their pearls, I have a few humongous ideas.

Someone dare me.

Please.

David, maybe you should post your challenge in the main forum. I'm all for enabling a more challenging showcase environment. I'm just not sure it's between me and you.

I believe the bachelorette party stories about Nashville to be perfectly true. I just don't think they have so much to do with why making a living songwriting in Nashville is so challenging. They DO however give a "juicy" edge to an otherwise depressing view of the new Nashville. That's what freelance writers and online magazines have to do...

FWIW, my spouse just got back from a work week in downtown Nashville. Didn't see any bachelorette parties, or at least any that she shared with me. She did have a blast though, which surprised her (and me) since she is definitely a tea and crumpets type.

Cheerio!
