We were talking about the Generate button. All the other ways I have implemented with AHK scripts to control Biab from Reaper, that's not new. This is a simple no brainer thing to ask for that you have an option so it don't start to play every time and everywhere you have a generate button. Honestly guys, if I gave up left when I first came here when attacked by the old guard, like most do, where would Biab be now, honestly ask yourself. See why do I have hit stop after the Generate button all the time ? Not really. You are forgetting the Play button.
Let's assume we get that option, how it will interact with Play button that does auto-regeneration as it "senses" changes in composition and regenerates all non frozen tracks automatically.
P.S. time to upgrade laptop? I keep an older PC for guests to browse internet, check email, etc. if they are staying over, but for music making, even for forgiving BIAB, i3/8ram is pretty weak. No I didn't forget the play button at all. When the user preference is enabled the user can first select the generate and play button to generate all tracks and then select the play button to begin playback. The only change in operation is the generate and play button initiates one task instead of two. As you mentioned the play button automatically initiates a regeneration if needed. In this case, since the user manually initiates a generation or regeneration the play button should not initiate another. The laptop works fine and it has handled 2024 well so far. So far I've found only one song file where the computer bogs down so that likely the first sign the laptops days are numbered. I have a desktop computer for heavy duty tasks. There is a setting in Realtrack Preferences (Options >> Preferences >> Realtracks) called "Speed up generation of Realtracks".. I'm aware of the preference. By default it is enabled. I unchecked the checkbox to turn the preference off. Just below it is "Tempo/Pitch stretching quality" and I have that on the low setting. I change it to high as needed. Both of these settings help with RealTrack generation but have no effect on the other type of tracks Band-in-a-Box can use. These settings are what inspired me to believe PG Music is sympathetic to users with older or slower computers. I've tested and a workaround to this grave issue ... It's not a grave issue, it's a user request. why would you want to generate and not play? You don't, you want playback to start when your computer and you are ready, not before. For those much older computers, assuming they run BIAB at all, then just disable the Fast Generation of RealTracks. In effect, this accommodates the request. Not at all. RealTracks is just one of eight different types of tracks Band-in-a-Box handles. RealTracks is just the only type of track that PG Music has accommodated so far. Musocity's comments indicate there are other reasons to separate the generate and play actions I have not considered. The nice thing about a preference request is if it it honored users will not even realize it unless they need to change the setting.

This is getting interesting, Jim. I focused on RealTracks because the regeneration of a song only stresses the CPU and RAM if the BIAB song has RealTracks. The slowest computer out there can play back audio files and MIDI files. What you say is mostly true Matt but remember every midi track requires a synth for audio playback. While the actual midi data may not stress the system, a soft synth used for audio playback may. Also there are other types of files like KAR files that include lyric data which can add additional system stress.

Great points, Jim. I do not have any experience with Karaoke, and I use a hardware MIDI synth so there is almost zero load on my computer from MIDI files.
