I've hesitated upgrading my website because I'm just not savvy about stuff like that.

So I decided to just jump in and do it

www.HerbHartley.com is now online and updated but still a work in progress.

More work to do but it's working so far.

Looks good, Herb.

The only thing I don't like about it is the cookie announcement. I would give people a chance to opt-out of the cookies. Personally, I don't mind them, as I can clear them when I'm done, but I know others that flee when they see that.

I didn't put that there. Thanks. I'll check on that. Unless they are macadamia nut cookies, I don't like them either.

The cookie notice is REQUIRED by the European Union. If anyone in the EU like me would access your website and NOT be given that notice, you'd be in violation of EU law. So, the cookie notice is a must-have, but it should ideally offer the possibility to accept only essential cookies and the ability to opt-out of all other cookies. Almost all websites I access for the first time from France offer that option, but there are a few that only offer a "take it or leave it" option. If I need to access that site for a specific reason, I accept and then use a cookie cleaner to remove the offending website and its cookies, like I just did with your website. I use the "Cookie Manager" or "Cookie Editor" (both names are referenced; I don't know which will work with the search funtion in the Google Extensions page) from Hotcleaner: chrome-extension://iphcomljdfghbkdcfndaijbokpgddeno/manager.html

Well I didn't know this but I guess my website hosting and building folks did.

Cookie notices, apparently, are required. Something about the privacy laws. You should be able to opt out as I will do when that option is available.

Cookies don't really bother me. They can track me all they want. It really makes no difference in my life.
Even LifeLock has changed their tune. They used to guarantee your info would never be stolen if you use them. Now they have the disclaimer that "No one can prevent all cybercrime or prevent all identity theft". For every defense the scammers create about 5 more ways to do it.

Can you tell me how a website that does not have cookies is treated under this law? Must the site display a notice that it does not have or use cookies?

I've written all my own website code since 1994 (yes, I know they look dated now) and would appreciate the advice. Thanks.

Herb, very nice site.

You see my question above to The Maartian about the EU regulations. In your case, I see that a GoDaddy template was used. Is your site also Hosted at GoDaddy? The reason I ask is to determine who wants the cookie. Is it GoDaddy tracking how many people access a site developed with one of their templates, or is it GoDaddy tracking access to their hosting service?

[I make the assumption that since you did not know initially that cookies were being used, the cookies do not benefit you directly. The exception would be if the cookie is used by the Hosting service and they offer you statistics about who accesses your site, from where, how often, what pages are favorites, etc.]

Answering my own question, I found this right away on Google, and it gives a start to the answers. Interestingly, it isn't just the EU, but includes other countries:

Do I need a cookie policy if I don't use cookies?

If you use cookies to collect data from your site users, then you must have a cookie policy. However, if your site already has a privacy policy page, it is not mandatory for you to add another page called 'cookie policy.

Do you need a cookie consent banner?
Yes, if your website uses and stores cookies on visitors' browsers.

What happens if you don't have a cookie policy?
If you don't have a cookie banner, you can be in violation of privacy regulations like the GDPR in the EU, LGPD in Brazil and PIPEDA in Canada.

FWIW, I use Firefox, which has an option to auto-answer many/most such requests with an answer to ones own taste, within broad limits. IIRC mine's set to "Always reject optional cookies". My cynicism means that I don't much trust the websites to honour that anyway and they, not I, get to decide what exactly is "optional" anyway. frown

Obviously I don't have a clue how to use a cookie other than to dip it in milk if it's an Oreo or eat it if it's anything else. I would assume Go Daddy is collecting the info for marketing purposes to litter your feed with adverts. Yes... Go Daddy is the site builder/template and they also host the site. I've been with them for quite a while. Just recently decided to join the subscription model for my website since it's really super easy to build and update as needs change.

I do not use cookies on my website (I built it myself). The shopping cart does use cookies that expire when the user logs out.

My policy:
https://www.nortonmusic.com/info.html#privacy

I truly believe that if a site offers cookies, there should be an opt-out for all but the essential ones. It makes people more confident when visiting your site.

They don't bother me, my browser rejects 3rd party cookies, and clears all cookies when I close it.

I wouldn't mind websites tracking me for advertising purposes, if they would only give me 20% of the take. smile

Just checked it out and I got say that the layout it's clean and easy to navigate. Since you’re upgrading your site, you might want to have a look at this guide on SEO for surgeons, even though it’s aimed at clinics, a lot of the tips about visibility and local searches apply to personal sites too. Could help more people find your music
