I have by installation on an SSD F:/bb and am updating/installing 2024 as I write.

I checked the box to install the audiophile files.

It's taking a very long time to install, as though it's installing everything again from scratch. Have I done this the wrong way, or is this how it works with the audiophile edition. At the present rate, I douibt it will finish today, maybe not even tomorrow. It's been about for hours and I'm <10% done.

Something else I've seen is that a few files, only about four or five so far, report unable to write because the file already exists, but [Retry] procedes as if the write was successful.

That does not sound normal. Even installing everything new wouldn’t take hours in a reasonably fast machine.

Hmm, odd. The original install took some hours, but I presumed that was due to 2TB of data.
The machine doesn't seem to be working terribly hard .. 2% CPU, 19% memory, 25% Disk ~0% network..

I have just set the "sleep" option to "never", but it did that only once.

Looking through the stats in task manager, it seems that the USB drive (PGM's drive) is a bottleneck at ~80-90% usage. It's on a front-panel USB port, which I think is a USB 3.x. It's averaging about 14MB/s,(*) though peaking occasionally into the 30s. "Average response time" is mostly in the 12..20ms area, thought I've seen it in the 30s. Both the drives in the machine are down in the 10% usage area, though the wite times are fairly slow ... mostly < 1MB/s. There's quite a bit of writing going on on the C drive (an M.2), which might suggest the install is copying via C. (No it's spinning rust - it's Linux that's on the M.2)

(*) Not any more ... it's now reading at about 200kB/s and ~60% usage... it's also occasionally writing (faster) ... why would it be written?

I think I'll close the browser and see if things improve ... browsers can somethimes be resource hogs.

Edit: No significant change; nor was there by shutting down Thunderbird, nor AFAICS from shutting Task Manager for a while. It's a mystery.

Edit 2: I just walked away and left it ... I came back and it's again at 20MB/s area, but still only about 15% done (guessing by the progress bar). confused

It's running at present at aroung 20..30MB/s and I reckon 2TB at that speed will take around 24 hours, assuming it's actually installing everything, which I was under the impression it didn't do ... only copy on the new stuff. frown

That means that my main working machine will be tied up in Windows for all that time! Probably I should have done .wma and .wav files using Linux commands instead.

Actually I probably can if I abort the install ... It's installing .wav files at the moment. If that's the final stage and an abort won't break anything else(!). Could I do that? I could do the copy with cygwin.

I haven't actually run the FULL installer in years. I do the minimal install, then copy only the new RealTracks folders that I'm interested in. So I base my comment on that, rather than the factory install.

Yes, I think that's what I should have done ... I've done that before with the UltraPAK, but I'd seen mention of files only being copied when necessary ... I now suspect that applies only to things like, e.g. executables, though updates to styles were mentioned.

I'm done for the day but the install is still only around 30%. I'll leave it running overnight, but I suspecty it will still be a long way short of done tomorrow. Oh well ... lesson learned, I think.

Joy of joys ... Windows decided autonomously to reboot for an update during the night, so the install is aborted anyway. What a waste of time. frown

The impression I get is that the program stuff and WMAs were completed before it started the WAVs and all that remains is to copy the newer WAVs to the machine. Hopefully nothing was corrupted.

This is one of the many things about Windows that I find quite crass.

You know that this can be configured, you can easily avoid it. Let's hope you don't leave for a complete tour....

Updating? Yes I do ... I thought it was set to Off. I must still have the "during down time", or whatever it's called, still set.

Edit: Hmm, or maybe not. I've set it to "Notify", which may do it, but it will not let me set the "active hours" to 24h, so I guess I'll find out if this works next time I leave the PC running overnight.

It's probably because I don't use Windows that often that I find some of these settings tricky to find and set. I think I should now have all "system sounds" set to "none", but I still get the occasional one, and they can be appallingly loud. Time for another tour around setup I guess.

Oh dear. Having done the install that was aborted, I'm now trying to copy just the new stuff on but, maybe because it's already part copied, the new RealTracks alone are estimating "more than 1 day". At present I'm just hoping the estimate is poor. ... Ah, as I write it's dropped to About 3 hours. That's more sane.

I usually install Ultrapack version first, then...
Make 2 folders (Drums and Real Tracks) in separate locations and just copy content of corresponding folders from supplied audiophile drive to internal. Then point BIAB to those folders for Rt/Rds.

With this approach you can copy content in blocks, to be safe. Last year I used a software to compare both source and target folders and just copy the newer content.

There were quite a few discussions on this matter with ideas put forward as:

Obvious, but likely not simple - switch to Flac, reducing the size by 1/2

Obvious and simple-offer Audiophile to Audiophile update on USB flash drive, with just new content shipped.

Obvious & simple, but time consuming - download just the yearly newer content.

Obvious and simple, but pricey, offer a choice to upgrade spinner drive to any other drive (at buyer cost of course)

I use FreeFileSync occasionally for synchronising systems. I've just started doing it for this after I "thought" I'd copied everything. Apparently I hadn't, though some of the missing files were from several years ago. Odd.

Something else that's very odd is that when I tried to use FreeFileSync of the RealTracks folder if declined with some kind of permissions error, which I couldn't resolve of the folders in question, nor could I access the contents of the fiolders. After a fair bit of messing about I ended up opening the Properties for RealTracks->Security; set the security for RealTracks sensibly, then Advanced->Change Permissions, checked the "Replace all child object permissions..." and did [Apply]. I can now read the folders and FreeFileSync works on them. I'd earlier done a copy on 2022 and 2023 stuff to this folder, so I don't understand why I apparently couldn't any longer.

I also had the following, which I shall resolve by forcing the distribution copies to overwrite my local copies.

To add to the possible methods, here's what I do:

I do the minimal install of the annual update. Then I use my file manager program, Total Commander. It's like the old Norton Commander. I paid some fee in 1997 and it's still free, despite several updates per year.

Then I sort the RealTracks folders by date on the new supplied PG Music drive, select the new ones I think I will use, and copy them to the destination folder where I keep the RealTracks. This takes maybe 10 minutes tops each year.

Then I go deeper into the /bb folder and find any style files,.bt0 files etc. and copy them over. Another few minutes.

Gordon, I'm a little puzzled by your printout of the date and folder sizes. I see they are almost but not quite the same. It's not a case you often see of one having WAV files and one not.

Perhaps this was caused by the large number of improvement patches made to some existing RealTracks that PG Music did a year ago or more. If so, I would have expected the date to be updated, but then the method I used in the above post would not work the same. I think you did the correct action by taking the version from the new 2024 drive and copying those over. your existing installation.

It's very weird as the newer ones are just one second newer than the older ones. I don't understand that at all. I'd wondered if they were some from when I was expanding WMAs to WAVs for BIAB on Linux, but I can't think of any reason that would make a 1s difference. I just put them in the post in case it was useful to PGM or whomever, which it probably isn't.

On the updating stuff in your previous post, I think I'll switch to similar, though ptobably sticking with FFS. I've already set up scripts to do the copy-in and it seems to be fairly pain free. I previously used Unison, but the last time I tried it the Windows version was broken.

I get the impression my update is now sorted.

Thanks for the help, all.
