Down The Drain on Soundcloud
Down The Drain on YouTube

This one seems so esoteric that even I don't know what it means, Maybe it's political. That's something I don't get. The only lyrics I partially understand are the Bridge, but... You know how you have some chords and start singing without words or melody as if conjuring up the songwriting gods? Well the first 4 lines started showing up, then the title for the hooky part. I just sat back and waited for the rest to of the blanks to be filled. All along I knew that if Dave joined in, I'd like it.

File:Down The Drain.SGU
Style is _BOOGNO2.STY (New Orleans Boogie w/ Train Drum)

RealTracks in style: 2151:Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm NewOrleansBoogieKevin Ev 165
RealTracks in style: 2150:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm NewOrleansBoogie Ev 165
RealDrums in style:NewOrleansBoogie^04-a:Funky Snare , b:Snare, Tom Ride

Dave Bell (Blue Attitude) DID join in so at least there's something to like. smile I sang and played bass. In the last line I actually sang a Bb(1), which is the Bb below the guitar's range, which is something I'll never use again. smile If it's ever needed, I'll ask Dani48 to help.

Down The Drain

Frightened by the light, the terrifying light,
we're never gonna see it quite this bright.
Someone pull the switch to get it black as pitch,
then everything will be alright.
Severed from the old, the new one's gettin' cold.
Swing its frozen feet into the fire.
Take away the new, bring the next one through.
Down the drain with all desire.

Let it settle down, and take away the crown.
We never gonna keep the king in check.
All the people cheer when pouring his free beer.
Throwing back they nearly break their necks.
Kingdoms come and go. Sit back and watch the show.
Listen to the strings and join the choir.
There's nothing to decide. There're no rules to abide.
Down the drain with desire.

What we do when we run out of hope decides what we will become.
When what we know now is less than we knew it makes all we did undone.

Sitting by the stream we hear a distant scream,
and everybody runs away in fear.
Chaos on the path reveals some hidden wrath
that rises up when we draw near.
No help is on the way. There's no time left to play.
We'll never make it throught the mire.
When all else fails we cry, preparing now to die. Down the drain with desire.

Marty,

You and Dave are really cooking on this one! Love the lyrics and your performance. Yeah, that's a cool bass note at the end - very well done. Dave is getting some great tones here - almost like horn stabs!

Excellent!

Nice to hear that even you don't get the lyrics, but hey, who cares when it sounds good?
I remember Phil Collins saying he didn't know what "In the Air Tonight" was about, and it went number 1.

Anyway, I like what you two have done here.
And "all the people cheer when he pours his free beer" is a pretty cool line. Works without any context smile

Hey Marty...what? I mean I get it it...it's a "dissertation on the the geo-political and non-existential ramifications of neo-economic policies in fourth world cultures"...that parts easy...but how the heck does Dave continually play that good all the time? that's what I don't understand...make sure you have him check that "I am not a robot" box before your next tune...anyway, with all seriousness aside...cool as usual! I love how you take different styles and genres and create interesting songs (not to mention your videos)...usually your bass lines are so transparent (a good thing) but there were some really great bass riffs going on here that jumped out and that bass vocal stuff at the end was low man...IMHO you've got a eclectic, geo-political, non-existential hit on your hands ...you know what I mean?

Marty,

You and Dave never fail to deliver. I started sorting through the lyric and my brain said, "Nope. Don't want to take this one on.". But it. as did I, enjoyed the song very much. Some great music - like that's would surprise me..

As far as a lyric that no one can understand - that's not an issue. Ever listen to "MacArthur Park"? Clear as muddled mud! Still, an iconic song. Uh - should Tim Foust give up his job as super bass singer for Home free? Just wonderin'!

Good one, gentlemen!

Alan

Nothing wrong with a bit of stream of consciousness.

Cool retro sound - well done!

It's obvious to me, Marty, you - my friend - are a musical philosopher! Awesome job, and the as-low-as-you-go note was a great ending to the down-the-drain hook.

Hey Marty,

Fine tune, with a nice beat - it had me moving my feet!

I liked the lyrics - just letting them pour out of your subconscious is the best way to go. Maybe you'll figure out what it means later on. But letting your listeners find their own meaning in them is also good.

Dave's guitar sounded great, too!

Keep'em coming!

Hi Marty,

This is good stuff - only suggestion is vocals louder and less reverb.

Best Regards

Marty, as I tried to decipher your lyrics word got out about what I was doing and men in white lab coats came, put me in the funny jacket where I couldn't move my arms, and put me in a rubber room mad grin

I liked that bass and your vocal.
Dave always adds the icing to the cake.
You two are the dynamic duo.

I liked your song!

Yeah, "horn stabs." That's perfect, Bob. Thanks for the listen.

Haha, glad we're on the same blank page, Brain. Obla Dee. You know I never have to correct your lyrics when you send them, but I must correct you now. "...when pouring his free beer." That king would never serve the people. hehe

WOw, Dan. That's deep, and I think you actually cleared it up for me. Why didn't I think of that? Right, I can throw anything at Dave and he always hits it perfectly. I like that robot idea, but "eclectic, geo-political, non-existential hit" is a pretty small group. So glad you're with me. Dan.

Hello, Alan, and thank you very much. You are a wise man to avoid dribble and enjoy the music. Mr. Foust has nothing to worry about; reaching the note is one thing, having quality in the sound is a whole nuther story. [Speaking of which, looking forward to your next book.]

Enjoy whatever happens!

Marty, the chaos of change in the lyrics leads the listener into the connect the dots realm. Not necessarily a bad thing. Dave’s guitar shines as does the bass. Good vocal with a surprising low down ending. Everything in it’s place and sounding good, Tom

Hi, Marty and Dave !

...and of course a most Happy New Year to both of you !

Why did I get a hint that this was all about
a chessgame - or rather many games (kingdoms) (chuckle) !

In any case, a very good tune and performance I´d say !

Cheers
Dani

Thanks, Floyd. Dave is like an Afghan Blues Hound wearing a ghillie suit. Hairy and scary good --> (that sounds like a law firm). I particularly like all you said.

Thanks, Dewey. That was exactly what I was looking for at the end. "How low can you go down the drain?"

Hey, Bob. Thanks. Glad you liked it --and found (the possibilty of) meaning in it. You're right, songs where the lyrics can mean different things to different people at different times become more relatable.

Thanks, Nigel. Yep. You pegged me correctly as someone who really doesn't like the sound of his voice. So my tendencies are always like, "The vocal is too loud in the mix," or "Maybe this knob will help." I appreciate your comment and will try to be more dedicated to the song --or maybe get a better vocalist. wink

Very cool Marty!

Yeah there are a lot of political protest songs popping up on the forum today.

Is there something going on out there or something?

Is there some kind of big bad Boogeyman with orange hair floating around the world like a big balloon scaring everybody with his shadow?

Maybe some kind of nightmare were there are some people who are covered in Bear skins running around yelling and voting Republican? Maybe some skinny old 90-year-old women who are still in office with faces that look like dried up raisins pointing their little pointy fingers, and other old dried up carcasses yawning and drawling and falling asleep in their chairs?

I wouldn't know you know because I don't read the news but if that is the kind of stuff that's going on that would be really scary!!!

Good song man!

"Kingdoms come and go. Sit back and watch the show", yes, this song is a very good show and I happily go down the drain with the desire to listen to it again in a place black as pitch - until Marty & Dave kingdom is gone, but I hope I won't see that day, I'd rather be swallowed by the hidden wrath laugh . Interesting story, I'm sure future generations will be pondering its meaning. Good song, good vocals, enjoyable guitar/bass playing.

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
