In relation to Thomas's excellent advice, a number of voices are available freely in what is called 'Lite' versions. There are also some beta versions freely available. These versions do not have all the abilities of the fully-fledged versions that can use cross synthesis to sing in Japanese, English and Mandarin. My first voices were Natalie and Kevin. If you are interested, I used them to create a duet version of a song a wrote a few years ago. This was second ever Synth V project.
