Just to have a presence in the current helter skelter holiday season postings I offer you one of three tracks I'm currently working on.
BIAB supplied the drums and organ. The rest is my fault.
Main vocals are untuned but the double & backings are all adulterated.
This one came about as someone was asking about a BIAB style for psych & pop psych. I cobbled together a style that was closer to garage psych but couldn't get anything aggressive enough to be Freak Beat.
As I was offline due to storm damage in our region I resurrected the "style" and worked on the song by replacing most things.
I added some leslie automation to some parts of the organ and to one spot in the bvox.
Lots of Big Muff clone guitar tone and the bass also has some grind added after the intro.
Feel Me Spin
Here's a new mix with observations and suggestions incorporated:
Feel Me Spin #3
It's a fairly obvious ode to an extinguished luminary of the late 60s.
Vocals are UP FRONT...I know: quel horror?
I hesitate to say it but it's more of a head phone listen.
Thoughts, suggestions and ideas gleefully canvased and accepted.
LYRICS:
V1B
The madcap giggles,
From behind his guitar.
"You can't see me",
"You can hear this far".
Peter pans across the room,
Peeking at his creeping doom.
C1
With each new day
We fade away
Look at you
Looking at me
Look at me
Looking at you
Each afraid
To speak

V2B
Bald man wander in,
& sits amongst the din.
"You don't see me",
"You don't feel me spin".
With every eye and one beside
In his act of regicide,

C2
With each new day
We've less to say
Look at you & you
Looking at me
Look at me & me
Looking at you
Each afraid
To speak

C3
Look at you
Look at me
& more each day
I fade away
Look at you
Looking at me
Look at me
Looking at you
Each afraid

& here's the "style" cobbled together if you ever feel the need...
Style SGU available until about 17th Jan

HI Ray ...

Very cool song! I'm not sure who the intended subject of the lyric is - I didn't listen to much of this genre - actually, all the sub-genres inclusive - so I'm absent a reference. The organ at the latter part of the song was a real treat!

It was a most enjoyable listen - seriously! The originality of your music always impresses me. Great start to your 2004 musical journey.

I really liked that one, the upfront vocal was just fine.
Very Pink.

Ray,

Great melody and love the lyrics... You always write such original and fresh material.

Your vocal sounds excellent - I really like it placed in the forefront. Agree with Alan on the organ. Love the effect at the end. Also, a nice mix.

Great stuff!

Love your faults, Ray. I read these words "Vocals are UP FRONT...I know: quel horror?" Then saw your profile pic. HAHA Perfect!

Like Alan, I'm not versed in the genre, but figured you were talking about me. I like Peter's "Pink" reference. I really dig the feel and the vocals up front (unadulterated and all) sounds just right, Goldilokcs.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Excellent.

The rhythm guitars are well done. Tasteful, even.

LOVE the Bass. A huge element of the song and sound. I especially like how you use it - as "another essential guitar" - and not just a "bottom". (When I do that, I almost always get a there-is-not-enough-bottom from the bottom dwellers).

I wish the drums had a bit more high end. I would imagine that is to tame the cymbals? And a hair more volume...

The organ was awesome.

Good vocals!!!!

GOOD STUFF.

Thanks Floyd,
the bass is built with a duplicate track...the dup has a high pass filter and an overdrive pedal VST on it which is then blended with the original to retain the bottom end and avoid the mush that happens with distorted lows. Yes, the cymbals - but I'll look at a work around.

Ray, this is a fantastic tune! Very impressive arrangement, playing and vocals. Tasteful FX throughout including the big ending. Like how you placed your vocals in the mix. Trying to recall your musical reference, but it's evading me. Really enjoyed this!

Ray,

You are truly the king of the sixties man bringing it all back home, like a straight dose of King Crimson.

On New Year's Eve I went to a party and wore my purple leopard print skin tight pants just for you man, and everybody was staring at me and I just said yeah baby!!

You should fly over here sometime to the states and we'll go to Woodstock and set up a stage and just let it rip, bring it all back.

What the world needs today. Give peace a chance.

Great song man and I'm going to download that style and use it myself.

Hi Ray,

I think your vocal is sitting right where it should in the mix, wouldn't call it upfront.
Bass sounds great, and I like the lick you are playing on the guitar, nice hook.
Organ sounds awesome!!
I'm missing the obvious reference you mention and you have me curious, late 60's is when I first started really getting into music.

Sounds great so far (listened to mix3) looking forward to seeing where you take it.

Hi, Ray.

Quote

Fairly obvious to you. laugh The obvious guess is Syd Barrett, but what do I know?

The vocal isn't up front, but as Marty says, it's sitting properly in the mix. I'd prefer it up front, but I don't really have a problem with making out the lyrics. It probably helped that I'd read them first. wink

After the fifth listen, it finally sinks into my brain that I don't understand this style. I don't have the familiarity with the songs of that period, so I'm listening to the song all wrong, expecting it to sound like something else.

Anyway, nice work! smile

ray,

I'm starting to get used to your songs.
I think this song's chord progression and modulation are especially great.
It's psychedelic, but it's quite pop and I can feel your originality strongly.
The vocals, guitar, and organ are very nice.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Ta Ron,
An approximate musical time reference for this would be 1967 in the UK and earlier in the US.
