A little over twenty years ago a friend of mine got a job playing drums for Darryl Worley who was a national touring country music act. They opened for Brad Paisley in Las Vegas when I was there and I was able to catch up with him after the show. He said that was his last night on the drum riser and when I asked what happened he said he took the job driving the tour bus because it paid a lot more. So much for being a side man. He said he wasn’t ready to go back home and wasn’t sure he ever would be. This is a song about some of that… RealTracks 518:Bass, Electric, Pop HalfNotes Ev 085 RealTracks 3583:Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm PalmMuteRockSlow Ev 100 RealTracks 1521:Bass, Electric, PopPower4s Ev 120 RealTracks 2677:Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm BluesStraightBrent Ev 085 RealDrums BluesRockSlowEv^4-a:Snare , b:Snare, HiHat Royalty Free Loops Recorded in Logic Pro X Plug Ins : Nectar 3, Neutron 4, Ozone 10, Tonal Balance, Waves LinMB, Waves, L3-LL Multi Limiter, Logic Pro Metering, Waves Vocal Rider, Scuffam Amps S-Gear Electric Guitar, Pedal Steel,Vocals, Tom Adams https://soundcloud.com/ta2-659414413/back-on-the-road?si=9ebeb3978cf249dc9ab4587d36637f26

Hi Tom,
The very first thing that crossed my mind after the first line - Hank, Jr. Nothing wrong with that, in my opinion.
Thanks for the back story - it adds to the listening aura. Your guitar work is always special. Your guitar work is always top notch, and the pedal steel is sweet, too! What I like about most of your songs is they tell a life story so nicely. Your lyrics are always down to earth and relatable and talk to the everyday person. The best lyric writers in Nashville have that ability - and you do too. In addition to your musical prowess, your story-telling is beyond excellent. I kinda see you as the modern day Tom T. Hall. I think you could write a song about an empty shoebox and make it sound like Top-Ten material. Great song - great listen!
Wishing you the very best,
Alan

Nice driving song, I especially like the parts you did, the heavy guitar, the pedal and the vocals. That's the real stuff!

Tom, outlaw country music, love it, and thanx for the flashback to Willie and Waylon. Great vocal. You have mastered a number of instruments. Great mix. Loved it.

Tom,
Every song you post sounds like it should be on the radio... Excellent story, vocals and production. You are writing some really terrific stuff.
Loved it!

Really good backing track, sounds so authentic to that southern rock groove. Great lyric story telling.

Another great one Tom. I've gotten used to those catchy signature guitar licks of yours - they always draw me in quickly. I hadn't expected that acoustic guitar in the intro. and it was super nice. Not a lot there, but it sure added a lot to the sound. I'm ecstatic that you're using more steel in your recordings and absolutely loved the effects you put on it. A lot of surprises in this one and it tells a great story - outstanding!
Brad

Tom, just a great song, expertly executed. That opening guitar riff drives a deep hook into the listener and the song never lets go. Great vocals, guitar and steel work throughout. The mix is perfect, too. Not much more to say except...I loved it!

Tommy. Your usual high standards in this one. Sheds full of dynamics. Going back to when I was a young teenager I left a band that later became famous. The rhythm guitarist played on for a couple of years and then did a similar thing as your friend and ended up being the band's roadie. Maybe the stress got to him.

Tom
Man you really brought it on this one! Love the back story......if that isn't song writing material nothing is! This one bears all the great marks of a song of yours! Killer guitars and vocals! Love that driving distorted riff carrying the song along! The pedal steel was really a wise choice...very effective! Tom, you are a top-level talent and always share great material with us! Take care, TB

Hi, Tom. Catchy guitar draws me in, driving sound keeps it going. Everything about this says it's top notch - the arrangement, vocals, lead guitar... Big and loud. Nice write and backstory, too.

Good song.
Yep.... I don't doubt that in some bands the crew is better paid than the musicians. I won't mention the band but it was a high technical level bunch of cats.... They were paid $100 a week per musician with sold out shows and radio play. If I recall creedence was another band that was starving on the road with number one songs on the radio.
BTW.... Love that tone.

Alan Alan thank you for the frame worthy review! I sincerely appreciate your support. The empty shoebox won’t be a top ten hit but it is already in the pipeline. If I listen closely enough to my own stories I’ll never run short of material. Stay well, Tom

Tom,
A good story and good story telling. Your mixes astound me. They jump out of my monitors, out into the room. So Tight. Loud and Proud.
Cool Steel. Nice Guitars... Excellent drum sound. Vocals sitting just right.
Solid.
