NEVER CALL YOU MINE - Jazz Cocktail Lounge Version

https://www.reverbnation.com/kaynemusic/song/34362335-never-call-you-mine-jazz

Continuing my quest for writing Standards that anyone could cover, this one is a classic smooth jazz ballad.
Many have given me valuable feedback (most of all my wife) that this song should be slower, and more jazzy than the first version I posted.

I went for a Cocktail Lounge feel, a simple jazz trio, late at night in a small smokey night club in New York City.

Which version do you think works best for this song?

Here's the Dance version for reference.

You rattled my imagination
cant think straight any more
You know you are all I hoped you would be
Now I see you are so much more

You have a certain inclination
and a different frame of mind
So confident and care free
I could never call you mine

Seems I've known you now for years gone by
Though we only met tonight
we danced we laughed and said goodbye
I could never call you mine

Im feeling new sensations Something I cant define
All within a moment or two
That count the passage of time

You caused a brief infatuation
cant get you off my mind
you are more than a passing fancy
but I could never call you mine

We are down with the lounge version.
We like the slight rhumba feel and the way the rhythm piano emphasizes it.
Great work with the vocals! They well present the nice write.
The band is outstanding. Really like that sax.
It's all wrapped in a fine mix with an excellent soundstage on our KRKs.

PS The ride is perhaps a bit forward and constant.

This type of music was often played in a bar I frequented and your song would have fitted in there perfectly.
Good job, Elliott!
The ride cymbal gets a bit annoying after while and distracts from the rest of the song.
Not sure if it really adds to the song.

Elliott, jazz lounge at its best!
You really have this genre down pat.
Super voices.
Great arrangement and mix.
My type of lounge jazz!

Well, the beauty of a "standard" is that it lends itself to a broad range of interpretations and tempos. So I'm not going to advocate for a "better" or "best" interpretation. I do think this is another really fine song in the standard style, and is supported by another superb arrangement/mix.

The final "never call you mine" sounds a bit rushed for this style of laid back jazz, so you MIGHT want to stretch it out a little. But that's a judgment call for sure.

Always enjoy your songs. This is no exception.

Hi, Elliot.

I recall the prior version.

This incarnation works for me even better than the first. Pleasant, jazzy and still catchy. smile

I like both versions.

This has a particularly sultry feel, which have have to say I like and it sounds real.

Hard to pick though. But this is good.

Hi Elliott,

Another great song from you!

Great vocals - who is singing?

Good mix - however I agree with another member - the high hat or ride cymbal (not sure which) is quite a bit to loud.

Otherwise excellent - well done and a very enjoyable listen.

Best Regards
Nigel

Hi Elliott,

I always enjoy your work. This is another great example to support that claim.

The hi-hat/ride cymbal didn't bother me as much as it did a couple of other folks. Maybe it's because as I'm closely approaching 80 years old, higher frequencies of my hearing have declined a bit. but, I've always liked a lot of cymbals.

The synth vocal is spot on. the little bit of vibrato you give her adds significantly to the quality of her performance.

As always, this was a true pleasure to listen to.

Best to you,

Alan

Yeah, I'm a frequent patron to this wonderful lounge. With songs like this, bands like this and singers like this it's the kind of place where no one talks and servers only bring drinks in between songs. I like the first one, too, and can't say if I like one over the other. They are the start of a great set. I'll wait for my drink until the next one.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thank you for the kind words. I took your advice and reduced the hi-hats, by EQ them down, unfortunately this is the Real Drum, and couldn't remove them completely.

Elliott,

I like both cuts, but I'm drawn to this "lounge" version.

Love the arrangement, vocals and the excellent mix.

Very nice work.

I could have sworn I'd already commented on this. Both versions are good, but I just prefer the lounge version. Is it a SynthV voice or an actual human?

Synth V Sheena on lead, and Solaria on BG vocals. As an experiment I used the same vocals on both the dance and lounge verisons just changing the backing tracks.

I think it's a good song, and as such both versions work. I like that sax in the first version, but if I had to pick a preference I like the slower one. It just seemed to have more "feel" to it. Good job Elliott.
