Went to high school in rural Georgia (USA) in the 70's. Not the most progressive part of our country, though it has its charms. Remarkably, our required reading included both Gulag Archipelago and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. I still stir a bowl of soup and look for the fish eyes. (Haven't found any...yet) Those stories seemed surreal then, but all too real today.
