Steve,
That's a great cover - very nicely done. Love the mix on this as well.

Bass,
To answer your question:
It is a violation of copyright law.
Everyone does on it YouTube though and not quite sure how they get away with it actually....
But PG wants to abide by the letter of the law and it is their right to ask or even demand this. It is the law and they own the website.

But PG wants to abide by the letter of the law and it is their right to ask or even demand this. It is the law and they own the website. On YouTube, it's easy: you mark that it's a cover version and indicate the copyright owners (if YouTube doesn't do that automatically), and your video will be demonetized and the owner will be paid for each playback. Or, with some labels/artists, your video gets blocked. I'm not sure if linking to a cover (we have to do this here because PG doesn't host music) is against any law at all.

B.D.,
Jeez-Louise, it is a violation, even if it only violates PG Music's policy. Only if it is THEIR RULE.
Why?
Because this is THEIR WEBSITE.
Because they OWN IT. It is not YOUR WEBSITE. It is THEIR website.
So, they get to say what the rules are, and not anyone else.
The User Showcase is an area where users of PG Music products (e.g. Band-in-a-Box or RealBand) can post links to their original song compositions, for others to listen to and comment on.
The songs must be originals, no copyrighted or "cover" songs. You must have all of the rights to the songs.
That should be enough.
Do you own the rights, yes or no????
If the answer is no you can't post, because it is a copyright violation, but also, just because PG Music asks you not to. Even if the source material is Soundcloud, you are still hosting an incubator for copyright-violating songs and they do not want to be involved. Are you a Canadian or US lawyer?? No? Then perhaps it is best best to withhold your legal advice.
It is disrespectful not to comply and that should be reason enough.
Sorry for the rant, but Jeez. People make this so complicated and we have heard it so many times before.
If everyone started posting covers just because someone thought the rule did not apply to them, then PG WOULD have to offer final warnings. They would have no recourse.
How can that be so hard to understand???

I sent this to the moderator. If this post is a violation of the no-covers rule then please delete this post. I see no way for me to delete it myself.

I just wonder why there's this rule to begin with. This was my bad as I failed to read the rules. That said, I too wonder what the spitit and intent of this rule is. I also wonder what the legal definition of a "cover" is. This is a big subject and may need a separate thread to even partially address.

Sorry for my rant and maybe PG should address this in a thread. If a moderator is reading this, maybe they will do exactly that.
A "cover" is pretty simple. You are performing a version of a song written by someone else, who more than likely has registered this song with their PRO (BMI, ASCAP, etc.) and has filed for copyright. You do not own the song or control anything, they do. You cannot record your own version and post it online unless you pay the license fee. (If it is a YouTube of a live performance that is a mechanical license, but everyone who is posting songs needs to read the laws in their country, and the countries hosting platforms where they are posting. There is a lot to know.)
In the United States, at least one PRO has bounty hunters combing through bars and nightclubs and restaurants with open mics to see if anyone is playing a cover song of a BMI artist (let's say Neil Young, I don't know if he's BMI or ASCAP) and if they are and the club doesn't have a blanket license from Neil Young's PRO, they can get (and have gotten) fined many thousands of dollars PER INCIDENT. Enough to put the bar out of business. That's why bars freak out if you start playing a cover song and they don't have that license. They will yell at you and throw you out. They can't afford it. Those bounty hunters get paid on commission and they are as aggressive as flies.
Now, again, unless you are a lawyer, you should not make random assumptions about the reasons for the PG rule; you know they have lawyers they have consulted on numerous topics, including this website, and you have to know there is a solid legal reason for every request they make.
It is the same reason you can't legitimately buy a BIAB file of a popular song with the melody line midi in there. That melody line is under copyright protection. It is against the law. People are starting to crack down on free midi files more and more by the way, and that is why you see them less and less, unless you buy them.
Copyright law violations are not a joke.
Hope that helps.
