I decided a few weeks ago to start selling my stuff. It came down to me deciding that I wanted to be the one who decides what to charge for each item and who gets it rather than leaving those decisions to my estate who would likely get it wrong.
This weekend was particularly tough. I ended up selling BOTH of my old Ensoniq keyboards to two different people. I had the ESQ-1 since 1988 and the EPS16 sampler since 1990. Those boards have probably played 2500 gigs over the years I owned them. Remember I quit playing full time in 1994, but those 3 years in the Motown band we played 350 shows a year, with the 3 days of doubleheaders we played every week for 7 months of the year making up a lot of them. The ESQ-1 in particular was tough. I opened the bag up one last time and played chords as I said
"G this is rough. B good to this guy. You never gave me even A MINOR problem, and he will make you A MAJOR part of his rig. C you around old friend. "
And the proceeds are going to my mortgage so when I die and my buddy buys it for mortgage balance (as my will states) it will work out for him.

Wow Eddie, bold move. I don't think I could do that. This "stuff" means everything to me, even that DX7 I bought new in 1984...they're my old friends...just couldn't part with them. But I do understand the reality of it all and have to admit you may have a better perspective than me.

A lot of people don't understand that planning your succession doesn't mean you are eager to get there... I don't mean YOU necessarily, but a lot of people.
My best female friend (and executor) has helped me with all this planning. She aimed me to a place to handle the organ donation (NOT a pun!) and cremation, made me aware of the NOX Box that was mentioned in another post, and her financial wizard husband has been a great sounding board as I bounced financial ideas off him.
My best male friend, who helps me with things I can't really do as my body goes through normal changes that limit me (i.e. not being able to step up onto a stool to change a light bulb due to vertigo, not having the legs anymore to mow my yard) stands to benefit from this as a means of thanking him for all he does for me. My dog knows him well because he comes over so often and just totally loves him. He is designated to take custody of whatever dog I have when I die. And to make sure the dog doesn't have to move to what I think would be a bad move for him, I added that codicil to my will that he be offered my house at mortgage balance rather than market value so he can buy it with a small VA loan. He also gets my car so the dog can still go to the park in his familiar car. But the instruments are different. They can be turned into cash now to help eat into that mortgage rather than be sold by the estate after the fact for probably way less than what I know I can get for them now. Without sharing his details, his living situation is not optimal right now for a older man.
Life is a series of changes. Selling those 2 oldest keyboards will make what comes next much easier. I mean, I honestly NEVER play anymore. The last gig I did, and take that word "last" literally, was Nov 2020. I'll keep the Kurzweil here in my office so if I hear something and want to figure out the chords I have that board right behind me, but eventually the Nord, The Roland and the Korg will all go too. Only the Kurzweil module of the 6 modular synths remains. Music has just become last on my priority list. I started in 1956. Enough already.

I don't collect gear, but I have a problem with old gear that I love. If I'm not using something anymore, and it's not dear to me, I simply give it to a music school. The owners of one that I know will pass it on to students for no charge. Fix them up first if they can.
But, I have two old saxophones and one old guitar that I don't want to part with. I don't play them anymore, but they've been with me for so long, I just like having them. Everything else I have either comes to the gig or is a “the show must go on” type of spare.
But, unlike you, I have a difficult time dealing with my eventual demise. I know I should seek professional help, but it just seems like there are always more 'important' things that need my attention.
My mortgage has been paid off for decades, so that isn't a concern. Mrs. Notes is female and six years younger, so odds are, it'll be her problem. I told her if she is the last one standing, sell the house to pay for her eventual care. We don't have children, so there is no one to fight over what is left.
I commend you for taking care of things before you go, but I hope you don't go anytime soon.

My old equipment ends up with friends, family or whoever wants them and will use them. That is a reward to both the giver and the receiver ..
I still get to visit them on occasion, and I can tell they are well placed.
One friend has a 32 channel board, a patch bay, a Fender Strat (with a dual 10" amp), a couple mics (one a decent LCD, the other an SM-57 for the snare), the Studio Projects preamp for said mic(s) .. I *think my old Juno 106 was last seen there too .. daughters have old synths/samplers just for fun .. but all my old 'friends' get enjoyed still, so I got that going for me
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I'll explain: I pointed out female because females live longer than men do. You remember females, don't you?  Add to the fact that she's 6 years younger, the odds are she will be around longer than me, and I'll have someone to care for me. Got it? I told her the last person standing can sell the house, and it'll pay for their needed care. BTW, I look great for 91 too, and I hope we both look this good when we get there. Also, if you are selling a nice tenor sax, let me know. I might be in the market. Notes ♫

I DO remember women. Vaguely... but I remember.
Best I can do for a sax is my mid 60s King alto. I bought it mainly because my father, who worked at HN White, then when it became King, had a hand in building it. However, as time passes and sentimentality fades it has long since lost any emotional value. Plus, he never really liked me much as an adult, so...
I mainly want to sell my stuff myself. My executor won't know what has value and what doesn’t. My keyboards, mixer, amp, stands et al should bring in over 5000, which goes to the mortgage. That is my quest now, to eat away as much of Mount Mortgage as possible. Slowly but surely most of it will go on to Reverb.

I've got a 1925 HN White silver plated alto. It's my only alto, and although the intonation isn't a nice as modern horns, it has the voice of an angel. I wouldn't part with that one if I were you.
Good luck with your sale, I hope you get a fair price for everything, and I hope each piece finds a home that will give someone many hours of enjoyment.

That HN White story is quite interesting. I met the grandson of Edna White, Henderson's son, while researching that sax before I bought it. Apparently the sweet Mrs. White that came to our house for dinner a few times was quite shrewd at her desk. When Henderson died in 1940, his brother Hugh thought he was taking over. Edna thought otherwise. One year-ish later, on Monday bright and early, Edna, her lawyer, and the police came in to the building to tell Hugh he was to leave. Edna's daughter Katheryn married into the Ludwig family. So by then between then King was also making brass and stringed instruments, and between them they had the largest part of an orchestra covered.
I love tough old broads like Edna wo take no prisoners.

Notes, sorry our timing wasn't better when I sold my Mark VI tenor a few years ago. Couldn't hold it (arthritis). Still playing a little soprano.
Eddie, most of my instruments are brass and a few woodwinds. I have instructed my family to send them all to a friend in California whose business is trading horns (I've bought and sold through him). He takes 20% but he prices them accurately and gets the instruments into the right hands quickly.

Bought it new, probably in 1959 or 1960. I traded a Selmer Modele 26 for that. Years later, I traded it in for a VII. It played great in the store, but when I got on the gig, I couldn't overblow it for a nasty edge, so I went back Monday to get my VI back, but was already sold. Lesson learned, when trying new horns out, don't be shy about playing too loud in the music store. So I sold the VII and got a H.Couf Superba. IMO a better sax than the VI. The tone was better than the VI and much more flexible. Fuller subtones, and when overblowing to get that extra edge on it, the highs were still more complex. It also had much better intonation, and keywork that fit my hands better with the best high F# key ever. Unfortunately, they quit re-lacquering saxes when I sent them in for an overhaul, and eventually it turned green with a finish blistered like a grapefruit skin. The Couf had a high copper content in the brass, which probably is why the tone was so nice. Sold it and got a gold-plated Grassi Prestiege. My hands eat up lacquer, so I figured a gold-plated horn would work. It didn't. The lacquer peeled off and took a lot of the gold with it. I still have it, and plan on cleaning it up and selling it, but life, gigs, and the BiaB biz keeps getting in the way (I'm not complaining). So I had a MacSax built and custom finished for me in silver colored nickel. It's a standard Taiwanese horn, and I like it a lot. But I started getting a lot of beachside gigs and didn't want the salt spray on it, so I bought a used Yamaha YTS-52 for outdoor gigs. I was pleasantly surprised with that one. Best intonation of any horn I've had so far, easy blowing, and a nice tone for rock and blues. A little more edge than the Mac, but not thin like the Grassi. After a few years beachside, the Yamaha is looking nasty, but still plays great. I was thinking it was too bad I sold the VI. I paid $600 for it new. So I looked up the inflation index and $600 in 1960 buys what $6,290 does today, and after all those years, gigging full-time, and a lot of wear and tear, I don't think I could have gotten $6k for it today. So it wouldn't have been a good investment. Now I have my Mac, Yamaha, Grassi (until I clean it up) and a King Alto. Through the years, I had a Conn Shooting Star and a Pan American I bought dirt cheap as back-up saxes, and I gave both of them away. Both were student horns to be used when my main horn was in the shop, but I started using my older horn as the back-up. Having a spare is necessary, because I'm one of those “the show must go on” people. Since I went full-time pro in the 1960s, I've never-ever missed a gig, or the downbeat. Eddie, pardon me for taking this so far off-topic. But any thread that lasts long enough eventually gets there. I hope you get good prices for the gear you are selling. Notes ♫

Last weekend I was having a conversation with a group of musos - mainly guitarists, of which I'm not. They always seem to be buying - not replacing- guitars. One guy said "Make sure you sell all of your guitars before you die." "Otherwise your wife will sell them for what you told her you paid for them."

I had a friend, an excellent guitarist, teacher, and collector. He had a huge collection including pre-CBS Fenders, early LPs, and so on.
He died after a long battle with a disease. Too bad, he was a great guitarist, and the few times I got to sit in on his gig we had a lot of fun.
He told his wife how much they were worth, and told her to sell them for not one penny less, the money will help you get back on your feet.
She moved 'up north' to be near her children and took the guitars with her.
