Update:
It seems to give a sort of working solution for my song requirements when just selecting _RYGRAS for the song and then on bar one, change # of beats to 3.
On bar 9 then change # of beats back to 4.
... Yes, that method will work. You can take one of more beats away from a style, but you cannot add a beat (you cannot make a 3/4 style play in 4/4). They have probably made changes to the way all of this works over the past few years.
